Following up on the thread from last Thursday and based on some of your comments…
The overall point I was making, is that I think it’s vital to acknowledge the pain we go through. Obviously, we do so in different ways.
When Felix was in the ICU, there were times I cried alone, believing it was best at that moment to do so away from our children. There were tears born of anguish, anger and occasionally the feeling of being abandoned. These feelings were so acute, so intimate, I didn’t want others to witness my agony.
The second night of Felix’s hospitalization after speaking to a nurse, I completely broke down in front of the twins. The deep sobs, moans of distress, and shaking overcoming me. When I could finally make a coherent sentence, I asked the kids to forgive me for the display. My oldest son said, “Why should you apologize? He’s your husband and you love him.” Not only did they see someone they love and trust be authentic, I believe the vulnerability allowed them to explore empathy and express compassion. They were given the gift of being able to comfort someone.
More importantly, if I had put on a brave face, determined not to give in to the heartaches, refusing to acknowledge the myriad feelings, I would have missed out on God comforting me.
I don’t know about you, but after releasing pent-up emotions, I’m a little more clearheaded, able to make good decisions, and overall in a better position to face the hardships.
What’s really driving this desire to get my friends to profess and unburden all their sorrows and frustrations, is what’s on the horizon. We’re going to need to be clearheaded, make good choices, and be able to cope with the hardships.
So many of us feel that God is not necessarily calling us to action right now; instead He’s calling us to be active in the aftermath. This is when we will be that tower of strength, that place of home and comfort for others. Our doors and arms will be open to those who will be in need of someone who is clearheaded, empathetic.
Some of us might be feeling angry, betrayed, abandoned and alone, hurt, disregarded and disrespected right now. Let’s bring that to the Lord, the only One Who can take our woes and give us His strength and peace in return.
We’re going to need it.

Our family attended the celebrate life service for the twins friend and track & field teammate last weekend.
The thought that mamas should not bury their babies slowly dripped through my mind during the gathering. When the life of a youth is cut-off, it’s so hard to reconcile, and I cannot imagine the pain the family has to bear.
I mulled over the story of Lazarus and how our focus is drawn to Jesus performing a miracle. Rightly so.
There’s something else so significant in this sweet story: we read about the sorrow gripping His heart. Jesus also saw the anguish of Lazarus’s friends and family and He demonstratively grieved. What an honor it is to get a glimpse into His perfect beauty in the account of Lazarus: “… When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled… Jesus wept… Jesus, once more deeply moved…”
How many times do we believe that we need to be stoic, quietly brave in the face of devastating events, shocking information, even news stories that draw out our anger?
Do we ever feel guilty for feeling sorrowful, broken-hearted? Sometimes. Why though? Jesus showed us there are moments we need to weep openly.
Jesus is our example. Always.
Perhaps we need to allow ourselves to feel these emotions, to acknowledge what we’ve endured, are enduring, and what others have suffered.
I think the need to release our hurt goes beyond experiencing the physical loss of someone we care about. Do we not mourn life changing events, loss of friendships, familial estrangements? Do we not feel anger for the seemingly lack of justice, the cultural rot, the inequities?
Let’s acknowledge the heartache, the burdens, and the anger, the fear, the confusion –all of it. Let’s bring the load we’re carrying to Jesus, tell Him what weighs so heavily on our hearts, then surrender it all to Him so He can do what He does best: exchange sorrows for miracles.
