| 4 | The TCP/IP model, also called DoD model, is a concise version of the OSI model. It originally contains four layers, unlike seven layers in the OSI model. The layers in TCP/IP model are: (i) Process/Application Layer (ii) Host-to-Host/Transport Layer (iii) Internet Layer, and (iv) Network Access/Link Layer.
Process/Application layer is the top most layer of four layer TCP/IP model. It combines the functions of Application layer, Presentation layer and Session layer of OSI model. Its protocols include the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
The Host-to-Host layer/Transport Layer is equivalent to the Transport layer of the OSI model. It is the third layer in TCP/IP model. The protocols in this layer include TCP and UDP.
The Internet layer is equivalent to the Network layer of the OSI model. It is the second layer in TCP/IP model. The protocols in this layer include IP and the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), which is used for error reporting.
Network Access/Link layer is the lowest layer (First layer) in the TCP/IP model. It combines the functions of Data link layer and Physical layer of OSI model. The protocols in this layer include Ethernet for local area networks (LANs). | 267 |
