| 4 | Bahir Dar University Hosts Chinese Embassy Delegation: Strategic Dialogue Charts New Course for Sino-Ethiopian Academic Partnership
Bahir Dar University (BDU) had the pleasure of hosting a high-level delegation from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia, led by Mr. Sun Mingxi, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), for a strategic dialogue and working visit with the University's team, led by its President, Dr. Mengesha Ayene. The seven-member delegation's visit highlighted the depth and dynamism of the growing partnership between BDU and its Chinese academic and institutional partners.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Mengesha Ayene remarked that the visit would open new horizons in joint research centers, technology transfer, staff mobility, and cultural exchange, further reinforcing the University's longstanding relationship with its Chinese partners. He noted that the visit carried great significance both for strengthening BDU's already established partnerships with Chinese institutions and for connecting the University with new ones.
The discussion, led by Dr. Mengesha, centered on several strategic pillars for deepening collaboration. Beginning with research and innovation, he proposed a joint innovation center for sustainable agriculture and water resource management, drawing on BDU's position within the Lake Tana and Blue Nile basin, and highlighted cooperation in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and engineering-focused technical education. On academic mobility and capacity building, BDU proposed a sandwich PhD co-supervision model alongside short-term technical training placements in China for faculty and technical staff facilitated through the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). Dr. Mengesha underscored BDU's existing industry-collaboration model in textile and fashion technology with Donghua University as an example of the partnership model the University hopes to extend.
Turning to cultural and people-to-people ties, which he described as a human bridge between the two sides, Dr. Mengesha proposed the establishment of a Confucius Classroom or Chinese Language Center at BDU. He requested the Embassy's support in facilitating best-practice exchange with Ethiopian institutions that already host Confucius Classrooms, along with the provision of Chinese-language teachers, and noted the Embassy's continued role in linking BDU with relevant Chinese institutions. On partnership mechanisms, he noted that BDU currently maintains active collaboration with 13 Chinese institutions and organizations, as well as cooperation under the China-Ethiopia Inter-Governmental Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation program. He welcomed the Embassy's continued role in connecting BDU with additional Chinese institutions and affirmed the University's readiness to draft a joint implementation roadmap with the Embassy's education section.
For his part, Mr. Sun Mingxi briefed the University on key national-level frameworks shaping cooperation, including a newly signed five-year Ethiopia-China agreement integrating Chinese language education into the national curriculum, and a bilateral memorandum of understanding on digital transformation advancing fiber infrastructure, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data under the Digital Ethiopia 2030 framework. The delegation affirmed its readiness to expand access to CSC opportunities through both Embassy/bilateral and university-to-university routes, describing the CSC as a bridge for BDU to engage with more Chinese universities. ዶ/ር መንገሻ አክለውም የታቀደው የድርጅታዊ መዋቅር ለውጥ ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲን ወደ ስትራቴጂካዊ ራዕዩ በማስጠጋት ትልቅ እመርታ እንደሚያስመዘግብ ጠቁመዋል። በተጨማሪም ይህ ማሻሻያ የዩኒቨርሲቲውን የትምህርት ጥራት፣ የምርምር አቅም፣ የአስተዳደር ሥርዓትና የተቋማዊ ብቃት በማጠናከር በሀገር ውስጥና በዓለም አቀፍ ደረጃ ተወዳዳሪ የምርምር ዩኒቨርሲቲ እንዲሆን እንደሚያግዝ ገልጸዋል።

| 18 | Pioneering Community Veterinary Pharmacy Established
Bahir Dar, July 23, 2026, Bahir Dar University's School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM-BDU), in partnership with Brooke Ethiopia, convened a stakeholders' consultative workshop today at Naki Hotel. The event brought together stakeholders from government offices, non-governmental organizations, and private livestock sector to refine strategies for establishing a Community Veterinary Pharmacy. The pharmacy aims to provide accessible, quality essential veterinary medicines to livestock keepers and to public and private animal health institutions in the Amhara Region.
Professor Essey Kebede, Academic Vice President of Bahir Dar University, in the opening address commended the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) for its exemplary community service despite being a relatively young school. Prof. Essey highlighted Brooke Ethiopia's valuable partnership and noted that the initiative aligns closely with the university's mission of delivering community-centered solutions through research and collaboration. He expressed confidence that the proposed pharmacy would serve as a model benefiting livestock owners, veterinary professionals, and regional agricultural productivity.
Dr. Mussie Hailemelekot presented the rationale for eststablishing the Pharmacy. He emphasized livestock's significant contribution to Ethiopia's economy, accounting for nearly 40% of agricultural GDP and about 20% of national GDP and foreign exchange earnings. He outlined persistent challenges, including limited access to essential medicines, irrational drug use, weak regulatory enforcement, antimicrobial resistance, and dependency on imports. Dr. Mussie detailed the partnership with Brooke Ethiopia, an international animal welfare organization active in Ethiopia since 2006 and collaborating with SVM-BDU since 2023.
Building on this rationale, Dr. Dehninet Terefe, from the SVM, outlined the project's vision of becoming a leading model for the sustainable delivery of essential veterinary medicines in Ethiopia. The plan follows a phased approach, establishment, service expansion, and transition to a self-sustaining enterprise with direct supply and importation capabilities, supported by a detailed budget framework. He acknowledged all collaborators for the success.
On the reflection session, Participants provided valuable insights, including: balancing community benefit with financial and commercial sustainability; strengthening local production to reduce import dependency; agumenting professional capacity, ensuring rational drug use, quality standards, fair pricing for smallholders, and a transparent supply chain; and building the technical capacity of pharmacy staff, including clinical support systems and close collaboration with stakeholders.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Zewdu Emiru thanked all participants for their active engagement and constructive input. He reaffirmed Bahir Dar University's commitment to incorporating stakeholder recommendations into the final design and implementation of the pharmacy, emphasizing that sustained multi-stakeholder collaboration, involving the university, government, development partners like Brooke Ethiopia, and the private sector, is essential for the long-term success of improving veterinary services and livestock health in the region. | 1 669 |

| 20 | Alumni Success Story: From a Dissertation on Waste to Building a Company that Creates Wealth
Dr. Medhanit Mamaye, a graduate of the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology(BiT-BDU), earned her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering in 2001 E.C. She later pursued graduate studies at Addis Ababa University, where she obtained both her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. Before becoming an entrepreneur, she served as a researcher and instructor at Hawssa University.
Building on her Ph.D. dissertation, "Pulp and Paper Production from Non-Wood Biomass: Sustainable Eco-Packaging," Dr. Medhanit founded Prim Pulp and Paper Manufacturing PLC, where she currently serves as its CEO. Her company produces pulp and paper products, with an initial focus on manufacturing paper bags as an environmentally friendly substitute to currently banned plastic bags.
