■ NUCLEAR ENERGY. #Economicgeography ◇ Nuclear energy is obtained from Uranium and Thorium. ◇ Nuclear power contributes only 2.75% of our total power generation at present. ◇ India is of the few countries which have developed the capability of designing, constructing, commissioning, and operating a nuclear power station without any help from outside. ◇ The real progress was made only after the establishment of the Atomic energy institution at trombay in 1954. This was renamed as the Bhabha atomic research centre (BARC) in 1967. ◇ The first nuclear power station with 320MW capacity was set up at Tarapur near Mumbai in 1969. ◇ Later, atomic reactors were installed at rawatbhata near Kota in rajasthan, Kalpakkam in TN, and Narora in UP, kaiga in Karnataka and Kakarapara in Gujarat also have nuclear energy plants. ▪︎SOURCE - D.R. ■ THERMAL ELECTRICITY. #Economicgeography #Energysources ◇ This type of electricity is generated by using fossil fuels like coal, diesel and natural gas. Obviously, thermal power is influenced by the availability of these fuels. ◇ In 1950-51 the installed capacity of thermal electricity was 1.1 thousand MW, in 2018-19 the installed capacity of thermal electricity reached a level of 303.9 thousand MW. ◇ Maharashtra is largest producer followed by Gujarat, Andhra p, west Bengal, Tamil nadu. ▪︎@upsc_geography_notes

■ HYDROELECTRICITY #Economicgeography #Energysources ◇ Currently, Hydroelectricity accounts for about 11% of total installed electricity. ◇ Hydroelectricity is a renewable, cheap, clean and environmentally benign source of energy and will available to us for all times to come. ◇ India’s exploitable hydro-electric potential in terms of installed capacity is estimated to be about 1,48,700 MW out of which a capacity of 45.4 thousand MW had been developed so far. ◇ Most of the sites suitable for generating hydroelectricity are located away from the consuming centres as a result of which a lot of energy is wasted in transmission. ◇ The hydro electric power generation in india made a humble start at the end of 19th century with the commissioning of a hydroelectric power plant in 1897 to supply electricity to Darjeeling. ▪︎SOURCE - D.R.
