■ ROOPKUND LAKE ◇ Roopkund (locally known as Mystery Lake or Skeletons Lake) is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand state of India. ◇ It lies in the lap of Trishul massif. ◇ Located in the Himalayas, the area around the lake is uninhabited and is roughly at an altitude of 16,470 feet (5,020 m),[surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains. ◇ Roopkund is a popular trekking destination. ◇ The size of the lake varies substantially, but it is seldom more than 40 meters in diameter (1000 to 1500 square meters in area), and is frozen in the winter. ▪︎https://t.me/upsc_geography_notes_optional

■ RENUKA LAKE ◇ Renuka lake is in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh in India and it is 672 m above the sea level. ◇ It is the largest lake in Himachal Pradesh, with a circumference of about 3214 m. ◇ This lake was named after the goddess Renuka. ◇ It is well connected by the road. Boating is available on the lake. ◇ A lion safari and a zoo are there at Renuka. ◇ It is the site of an annual fair held in November. ◇ It is designated as Ramsar site since November 2005. ■ PUSHKAR LAKE ◇ Pushkar Lake or Pushkar Sarovar is located in the town of Pushkar in Ajmer district of the Rajasthan state of western India. ◇ Pushkar Lake is a sacred lake of the Hindus. ◇ The Hindu scriptures describe it as "Tirtha-Guru" – the perceptor of pilgrimage sites related to a water-body and relate it to the mythology of the creator-god Brahma, whose most prominent temple stands in Pushkar. ◇ The Pushkar Lake finds mention on coins as early as the 4th century BC. ▪︎@upsc_geography_notes_optional

■ PULICAT LAKE ◇ Pulicat Lagoon is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India, after Chilika Lake. ◇ Pulicat Lagoon is considered to be the second largest brackish water body in India measuring 759 square kilometres. ◇ The lagoon is one of the three important wetlands to attract northeast monsoon rain clouds during the October to December season in the Tirupati Region. ◇ The lagoon comprises the following regions, which adds up 759 square kilometres according to Andhra Pradesh Forest Department: 1) Pulicat Lake. 2) Marshy/Wetland Land Region. 3) Venadu Reserve Forest. 4) Pernadu Reserve Forest (AP). ◇ The lagoon was cut across in the middle by the Sriharikota Link Road. ◇ The lagoon encompasses the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary. ◇ The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lagoon from the Bay of Bengal and is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. ◇ Major part of the lagoon comes under Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. @upsc_geography_notes_optional

■ KOLLERU LAKE. ◇ Kolleru Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India located in state of Andhra Pradesh and forms the largest shallow freshwater lake in Asia. ◇ 15 kilometers away from the Eluru and 65 km from Rajamahendravaram, it is located between Krishna and Godavari deltas. ◇ The lake is fed directly by water from the seasonal Budameru and Tammileru streams, and is connected to the Krishna and Godavari irrigation systems by over 67 major and minor irrigation canals. ◇  This lake is a major tourist attraction. Many birds migrate here in winter, such as Siberian crane. ◇ The lake was an important habitat for an estimated 20 million resident and migratory birds, including the grey or spot-billed pelican. ◇ The lake was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in November 1999 under India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, and designated a wetland of international importance in November 2002. ◇ The wildlife sanctuary covers an area of 308 km2.
