| 3 | 🇫🇷 Je m'appelle…
🇬🇧 My name is…
____
DEFINITION
"Je m'appelle..." is the most common way to say "My name is..." in French.
HOW TO USE
In French, there are many ways to say "What's your name". So, if someone asks you one of these:
• Comment tu t'appelles ?
• Comment t'appelles tu ?
• Comment vous appelez vous ? (Formal)
• Quel est ton nom ?
• Quel est votre nom ? (Formal)
• C'est quoi ton nom ?
• C'est quoi votre nom ? (Formal)
• Ton nom ?
• Votre nom ? (Formal)
• Nom ?
Then you can answer :
• Jean Dupont → Jean Dupont
• Je m'appelle Jean Dupont → My name is Jean Dupont
• Mon nom est Jean Dupont → My name is Jean Dupont
• Je suis Jean Dupont → I am Jean Dupont
And if instead of "Nom" (Name) we asked you specifically for your "Prénom" (First name):
• Jean → Jean
• Je m'appelle Jean→ My (first) name is Jean
• Mon prénom est Jean→ My first name is Jean
• Je suis Jean → I am Jean
Finally, if we asked you specifically for your "Nom de famille" (Last name / Surname):
• Dupont → Dupont
• Je m'appelle Dupont→ My (last) name is Dupont
• Mon nom de famille est Dupont→ My last name is Dupont

| 9 | 🇫🇷 Loin des yeux, loin du cœur
🇬🇧 Out of sight, out of mind
____
DEFINITION
The literal meaning is:
• Loin → Far
• des yeux→ of/from the eyes
• loin → far
• du coeur → of/from the heart
This proverb has Latin roots (from a poem by Properce, 1st century BC) and is very similar to the English one "Out of sight, out of mind". It says that the distance between two people weakens the affection they have for each other.
HOW TO USE
Use it as general wisdom. For example, if a friend is telling you about the troubles of his/her long distance relationship, you can say: "Loin des yeux, loin du coeur." (Far from the eyes, far from the heart)
FUN FACT
There aren't any popular synonyms, but weirdly, there is an antonym: "Loin des yeux, près du coeur" (Far from the eyes, close to the heart)
It means that even if you are far from someone you love, the feelings are still strong. Which one do you think is true?

⬇️ Text below ⬇️ | 221 |
| 20 | 🇫🇷 Arrête ton cinéma
🇬🇧 Stop the drama
____
DEFINITION
• Arrête → Stop
• Ton → Your
• Cinéma → Cinema
It's a common way to say to someone that he/she is being a drama queen. Because just like cinema actors, the person is playing a role and is faking it.
HOW TO USE
If someone around you is being a drama queen, you can say "Arrête ton cinéma".
This is familiar and, depending on the situation, it might get perceived as "kidding" but also criticism.
If you say it to tease a close friend about something, he/she will probably laugh about it. But if you say it to someone you barely know and with an aggressive tone, people won't react the same way, so be careful when you use this one.
Example: A football player is crying in pain after an opponent slightly touched him. You can say "Arrête ton cinéma !".
SYNONYMS
• Arrête ton char. ("Stop your chariot")
• Arrête ton charre. ("Stop kidding")
• Arrête ton baratin. ("Stop your jibber jabber")
• Arrête tes conneries. ("Stop your bullshit")(Vulgar)
• Arrête ton cirque. ("Stop your circus")
