🔆 Why the EU Plans to Use Carbon Credits in Climate Targets
📍EU’s 2040 Climate Target Update
✅ For the first time, the European Commission has proposed allowing carbon credits from developing nations to count toward its 2040 emission goals.
✅ The goal: cut net emissions by 90% from 1990 levels by 2040.
✅ Up to 3 percentage points of this can now come from buying international carbon credits.
📍What Are Carbon Credits?
✅ Carbon credits or offsets fund CO2-reducing projects abroad, allowing buyers to avoid cutting emissions at home.
✅ Example: Funding forest restoration in Brazil or switching city buses to electric in Africa.
✅ Seller gets climate financing; buyer earns credit toward emission goals.
📍Why Is the EU Using Them?
✅ EU’s existing domestic-only targets are hard to meet amid political and economic backlash.
✅ Carbon credits offer flexibility to meet goals while supporting green projects globally.
✅ To meet 3% of its target, EU must buy ~140 million tonnes of CO₂ offsets—roughly equal to Netherlands’ annual emissions.

🔆 INS Tamal: India’s Last Imported Warship
📍 A landmark moment in India’s naval indigenisation journey
✅ INS Tamal, built in Kaliningrad, Russia, is the last foreign-built warship inducted into the Indian Navy.
