15 अगस्त 2020 को शुरू किया गया 'प्रोजेक्ट डॉल्फिन' ने अपनी पहली अखिल-व्यापी डॉल्फिन जनसंख्या का आकलन पूरा कर लिया है। साथ ही, इसने वन्यजीव (संरक्षण) अधिनियम, 1972 के तहत गंगा डॉल्फिन और सिंधु डॉल्फिन को अलग-अलग प्रजातियों के रूप में मान्यता देकर उन्हें मजबूत कानूनी सुरक्षा प्रदान की है। यह पहल दुर्लभ "इरावदी डॉल्फिन" के संरक्षण का भी समर्थन करती है, जो भारत में विशेष रूप से चिल्का झील के लिए जानी जाती है। इसके अलावा, इसमें चंबल नदी में 200 किलोमीटर का 'डॉल्फिन संरक्षण क्षेत्र' बनाने और 'डिक्लेरेशन फॉर रिवर डॉल्फिन' जैसे वैश्विक प्रयासों में भागीदारी जैसे प्रस्ताव भी शामिल हैं।

इंडिया स्टेट ऑफ फॉरेस्ट रिपोर्ट (आईएसएफआर) 2023 के अनुसार, भारत का कुल वन और वृक्ष आवरण 8.27 लाख वर्ग किमी है, जो देश के कुल भौगोलिक क्षेत्र का 25.17 प्रतिशत है। इसमें से अकेले वन क्षेत्र 7.15 लाख वर्ग किमी (21.76 प्रतिशत) है, जबकि वृक्षों का आवरण 1.12 लाख वर्ग किमी (3.41 प्रतिशत) में फैला है। वर्तमान में भारत के वनों में 30.43 अरब टन कार्बन स्टॉक जमा है, जो जलवायु परिवर्तन के असर को कम करने और पर्यावरण की सुरक्षा के लिए देश की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण प्राकृतिक संपत्तियों में से एक है।
