Indian Rupee Hits Record Low of ₹86 Against the US Dollar The Indian Rupee's depreciation to ₹86 against the US Dollar has wide-ranging impacts on the economy: Impact on Imports and Inflation: - Increased import costs due to India’s reliance on imports for goods and services, particularly oil, machinery, and electronics. This leads to higher fuel prices and inflation, which directly increases the cost of living for Indian households. Impact on Exports and Competitiveness: - A weaker rupee enhances the competitiveness of Indian exports like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT services. This provides a boost, with exports reaching $670 billion in FY 2023, partly driven by favorable exchange rates. Impact on Foreign Debt and Financial Markets: - The depreciation increases the cost of servicing foreign debt, as India’s external debt stood at $620 billion in 2022. Additionally, FDI and portfolio investments could decline due to uncertainty and currency volatility. Impact on Indian Households: - Indian households face higher costs for imported goods such as electronics and fuel. Travel and education expenses abroad also rise due to a weaker rupee.
