🌍 Has the Environmental Crisis in India Worsened? | Explained for UPSC CSE
🗓️ World Environment Day Special | June 5, 2025
India today stands at the epicenter of an escalating environmental crisis — one driven by a dangerous trio:
🔥 Rising carbon emissions
🐾 Accelerating biodiversity loss
🛢️ Rampant pollution
🔹 Startling Stats:
→ India's CO₂ emissions jumped from 2.33B (2015) to 3.12B tonnes (2024)
→ Delhi remains one of the most polluted cities globally
→ India generates 62 million tonnes of waste annually, but only 20% is scientifically treated
🔹 Major Causes:
1️⃣ Overdependence on coal (still 70% of India’s power)
2️⃣ Deforestation for roads, dams, and mining
3️⃣ Monoculture farming → habitat loss + water pollution
4️⃣ Urban chaos: sewage, industrial waste, unregulated landfills
5️⃣ Role of Global North & MNCs: 100 companies caused 71% of global emissions since 1988
🔹 India’s Dilemma:
Though India has a low per capita emission (1.9 tonnes), its total emissions are surging due to industrialisation.
⚠️ The poor suffer most — droughts in Maharashtra, toxic air in Delhi, floods across the east.
🔹 What Needs to Change?
✅ Climate accountability by rich nations
✅ Strict laws for corporate polluters
✅ Promote green livelihoods & ecological agriculture
✅ Shift from GDP-centric growth to sustainability-first development
📌 Quote for Essay/Ethics:
"We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment." — Margaret Mead
