The World Bank has revised India's GDP growth forecast for FY2026 downward from 6.7% to 6.3%, primarily due to weaker exports and slower investment growth. This decision was made in light of several global and domestic factors: # Global Factors - Global Policy Uncertainty: The World Bank highlighted that heightened global policy uncertainty is a key drag on investment sentiment. This uncertainty is expected to slow investment growth. - Slower Global Growth: The global growth projection for 2025 has been lowered to 2.3%, marking the slowest pace outside of global recessions since 2008. This slowdown affects India's exports, as key trading partners experience weaker activity. # Domestic Factors - Weaker Exports: India's export performance is expected to be dampened by weaker activity in key trading partners and rising global trade barriers. - Slowing Investment Growth: Investment growth is anticipated to decelerate due to the surge in global policy uncertainty. # Positive Outlooks Despite the downgrade, India remains the fastest-growing major economy globally. The World Bank also highlighted some positive aspects of India's economic situation: - Fiscal Consolidation: India is expected to continue on the path of fiscal consolidation, with growing tax revenues and declining current expenditures contributing to a gradual decline in the public debt-to-GDP ratio. - Future Growth Recovery: Growth is expected to recover to an average of 6.6% during FY2026–27 and FY2027–28, driven in part by a rebound in the services sector and stronger export activity. To combat broader macroeconomic challenges, the World Bank's Chief Economist, Indermit Gill, advocated for lowering global trade barriers and implementing structural reforms.

📉 India’s Poverty Rate Falls Further: SBI Report | UPSC CSE Update 🔍 According to the latest SBI Research Report, India’s poverty rate is projected to decline to 4.6% in 2024, showing a steady reduction from the 5.3% estimated by the World Bank in 2023. 🧾 Key Highlights: SBI & World Bank poverty estimates are now closely aligned. The drop is driven by improved data collection methods and a revised poverty line. Based on the 2022–23 Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) using the Modified Mixed Recall Period (MMRP): Poverty stands at 5.25% (new $3.00/day poverty line, 2021 PPP). Just 2.35% under the older $2.15/day threshold (2017 PPP). 📌 Why This Matters: Shows the impact of targeted welfare schemes, economic reforms, and better survey methodology. Reflects real improvement in consumption and living standards. India became a statistical outlier globally, reducing global poverty count by 125 million, while the revised poverty line initially increased the global count by 226 million.
