In one of my recent student meet-ups, I casually asked a student:
“What source have you referred to?”
“Sir, topper notes.”
“Okay, apart from that?”
“Bas sir, wahi.”
It reminded me of our college days. Exam was three days away, syllabus untouched, and we would somehow arrange the batch topper’s notes and prepare enough to pass.
We knew the deal. The topper might get 80/100. We were happy with 55–60.
We never really expected to score more than the person whose notes we were borrowing. And usually, we didn’t.
But that was fine. The aim was to get the degree.
Here, we are not trying to somehow pass an exam. We are trying to build a career. If you rely on a topper’s notes and expect to become the next topper, there is a basic contradiction here. The topper whose notes you are reading did not rely on ready made topper notes.
He/she made their own. He referred standard books & material. struggled. Googled. Edited. Revised. Performed poorly in tests. Unlearned. Relearned. Developed insights. Remade the notes. He went through a process.
What makes a person successful is not the position that he holds, but the process that he follows. You may have referred toppers notes, but did you refer the process ?
The last stage of someone else’s preparation cannot be the first stage of yours.
Those whose earlier transaction failed may try this one.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Guys, sharing this for Dhondiram Tone, one of our students from Sociology Foundation batch, who urgently needs an aortic bypass surgery.
His family is currently trying to raise ₹6 lakh for the surgery and hospitalisation. We are a fairly large community here, and even small contributions from many of us can collectively make a real difference.
If you are in a position to contribute, please do. No amount is too small. If you cannot contribute financially, sharing this with others would also help…
Let’s help one of our own 🙏🏻

Sociology Optional Foundation – Paper II 2027
Enrollment Link: https://www.levelupias.com/courses/upsc-cse-sociology-optional-foundation-paper-ii/
Paper II often feels familiar.
“I’ve already studied caste, family, religion and social issues in GS. I just need to add Current Affairs.”
That is where many students go wrong.
Paper II is about understanding how Sociology explains these familiar issues.
This course builds that clarity through core perspectives, PYQs and answer writing.
Same issues. A sociological way of understanding them.
📅 Starts 11th September 2026

Hello students
Every year, we share our take on the questions that are relatively static and safer to attempt in the Sociology Mains paper.
This year too, a few questions clearly stand out on these parameters.
For Paper I, our picks would be Q2, Q3 and Q6 ✅
Both Paper I and Paper II were on expected lines- analytical and application-oriented
A clear paradigm shift is now visible in the way UPSC is framing Sociology questions. More than the ability to quote thinkers, upsc tested the ability to think.
Such papers may initially appear difficult, but in many ways, they are great levellers. When everyone first sees the paper, most students feel equally challenged. The differentiation begins afterwards.
Some simply recognise the topic and start writing whatever they know. Others pause, read the question completely, identify its actual demand, and then use their knowledge to construct an answer around that demand. That is where the opportunity to go unequal lies.
And for those who felt that Paper II was tougher , don’t be surprised if Paper II eventually turns out to be the higher-scoring paper. Analytical papers often reward those who understood the demand better than those who merely knew more content.
The paper was not asking: “How much do you remember?”
It was asking: “Can you think out of the box ?”
Respect for the question setters !
Last minute Tips for Sociology students ✅
✅ The first thing to do when you get the question paper is to check the number of pages for 20 marks.
✅Skim through the paper in the first 5 minutes and finalise the choice of questions. Choose the most 'static' question.
✅Never pick a question thinking that your choice of question will impress the examiner or you being the only person attempting that question will make you stand out in the crowd.
Question may be new or challenging or interesting to you, but to the examiner, it is just another question.
✅ some questions are deceptive. They look very familiar at first glance and may tempt us into attempting them. Think through such questions properly and attempt only if you have 'sufficient' & 'concrete' content.
✅ Not able to recall thinkers' names can't be the reason for not choosing a question. As long as you understand the demand and feel equipped with enough content to address the demand, you can't leave the question.
✅Whenever you are confused between two choice of questions, start comparing a question's subpart with another question's subpart. E.g. If you are confused between Q2 and Q3, compare Q2 a with Q3 a, Q2b with 3b, & Q2c with Q3c. This will make it easier for you to make the right choice.
Wish you guys all the best ❤️.. Fod do
