Standard Penetration test(IS 2131): Purpose: The SPT is used to assess the geotechnical properties of soil, particularly its relative density, strength, and bearing capacity, by driving a standard sampler into the soil. Equipment: The test employs a standard split-spoon sampler (50.8 mm outer diameter, 35 mm inner diameter, and 610 mm length) and a 63.5 kg hammer falling freely from a height of 750 mm. Procedure: The sampler is driven into the soil at the bottom of a borehole by repeated blows of the hammer, typically using a rope and pulley system or an automatic tripping mechanism. Depth of Penetration: The test records the number of blows required to drive the sampler 300 mm into the soil, after an initial seating drive of 150 mm (total penetration is 450 mm). Blow Count (N-value): The Standard Penetration Resistance, or N-value, is the number of blows needed for the final 300 mm of penetration, excluding the first 150 mm seating drive. Test Intervals: SPT is conducted at regular intervals, typically every 1.5 meters or at changes in soil strata, to profile subsurface conditions. Borehole Preparation: The test is performed in a clean borehole, free of loose soil or debris, with the bottom stabilized if necessary to avoid disturbance. Corrections: The observed N-value may need corrections for factors like overburden pressure, energy efficiency, or water table effects, though IS 2131 does not specify these in detail (refer to additional standards if required). Limitations: The test is less reliable in very coarse soils (gravel), very soft clays, or soils with large obstructions, and results can be affected by equipment or operator inconsistencies. Reporting: Results should include the N-value, depth of testing, soil description, groundwater level, and any deviations from the standard procedure. @macedhule
