Passive measures to control fire is achieved following guidelines codes and standards during the design process. The use of appropriate building materials also is important because of its flammability properties. Active control is required for large-scale & higher occupancy buildings. Along with the building design evacuating occupants in case of fire is important. An evacuation plan should be in place with appropriate wayfinding. Training the ears towards the fire alarms is also important for the occupants affected in case of a fire. Smoke forms the major limitation during evacuation and thus controlling smoke spread through design and mechanical means has to be adopted. Evacuation of people before the spread of both fire and smoke is desirable. This course will try to give an overview of fire safety measures for different types of building use and occupancies from multilevel buildings like hotels and hospitals to industries.
