🇬🇧 The Sandby Borg Archaeological Site This Iron Age ringfort, located on the southeast coast of the island of Öland, Sweden, is famous for being the scene of a brutal massacre that occurred around 480 AD, the details of which have been revealed by archaeological excavations. Sandby Borg is one of at least 15 circular forts built on Öland around 400 AD. The curved dry-stone wall visible in the image originally enclosed about 5,000 square meters, featuring imposing towers. Archaeologists have found the remains of at least 26 men and children who were violently murdered at the site. The bodies were left in the fort and remained "frozen in time" because no one returned to the site after the attack, offering a unique snapshot of daily life in the Iron Age. The attack, which some have described as "terrorist," does not appear to have been motivated by theft, as luxury goods such as gilded silver brooches were found at the site.
