The tariffs imposed by the US were higher than anticipated, with Trump stating that these nations would face tariffs equal to half the rate they impose on US goods. As a result, India will face a 26% tariff on all exports to the US, while China will face a 34% tariff. Market expectations were that the tariffs would range from 10-15%, but the actual tariffs imposed by the US were much steeper, with most countries, from Vietnam and Venezuela, facing US reciprocal tariffs between 15% and 50%. In India, the US has imposed a 15.6% tariff on electronics and 11.5% on gems and jewelry. On a positive note, India's pharmaceutical sector could benefit as Trump did not announce any specific tariffs for this industry. China will face a 34% tariff, while the European Union will be hit with a 20% levy, and Vietnam will see a 46% duty. India’s tariff rate will be 26%. As a result, global indices like Vietnam have dropped 10%, and markets in Australia, Japan, China, and US futures have fallen between 3-5%. Gift Nifty is down 300 points, or 1.2. Gold prices have surged to a record high of $3150 per ounce, while the US Dollar Index has fallen to a six-month low of 103. The steep tariffs are expected to fuel inflation, hinder global growth, and escalate the ongoing global trade tensions. Traders are advised to exercise caution stance and avoid buying until global market conditions stabilize.
