The Israeli occupation forces have detained the Palestinian academic Mahmoud Talal al-Najjar as he was leaving the Gaza Strip, through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, to Italy to continue his academic studies on an official scholarship.
Al-Najjar is the sole survivor of his immediate family, having lost his parents, his wife Alaa Salem, and their four children Yazan, Rinad, Muhammad, and Amr in an Israeli airstrike that targeted their home in the Jabalia refugee camp during the genocide.
Despite this, he continued his academic and research activities, completing several research papers and scholarly books. He was preparing to begin an academic program at the University of Tor Vergata in Italy.
