Ultimately, we must show how to defeat their program, not just vote against it.

Whatever happens in the Hungarian elections this weekend, it's important to understand that Hungarian democracy has served to concentrate autocratic power in Viktor Orbán's hands for decades. Even if Orbán concedes power without a fight, the system itself is the problem. Reigning governments always establish procedures that tend to reinforce their control. Coupled with the extreme concentration of wealth, this inevitably trends towards autocracy. We need a better analysis of the ways that representative democracy exists on the same spectrum with authoritarianism. https://crimethinc.com/democracy

The Pakistani Prime Minister announced that the US, Iran, and their respective allies “agreed to an immediate ceasefire including Lebanon.” Without speaking directly with Iran, Trump promoted this as an offramp from the war. Today, the Israeli military continues attacking Lebanon; in response, Iran continues to close the Strait of Hormuz. It's hard to imagine a worse outcome for Trump. He has achieved none of his express objectives in Iran, neither regime change nor suppressing Iran's nuclear program. He can no longer pretend to be a credible negotiating partner. Both his threat to target civilian infrastructure and his claim to have negotiated a ceasefire have been discredited. Neither the Iranian nor Israeli governments listen to him. He's forced into conflict with Netanyahu. And the economic pressure continues.

Hopefully, Trump is simply bluffing in his implicit threats to use nuclear weapons against Iran. But in case he is not: We must all think right now about what concrete things we can immediately do to impose consequences on the US government and Republican Party if Trump orders a nuclear strike tonight. We must not be passive. Too much is at stake.

In 2022, a movement in Iran brought people together on the basis of feminism, ethnic pluralism, and grassroots change. Since then, state repression, monarchist efforts to co-opt resistance, and finally imperialist attacks from the US and Israel have eclipsed those possibilities. All of these forms of counterrevolution are interrelated and draw momentum from each other, even as they appear to be adversaries. Never forget the stakes of this fight.
