Yesterday marked 55 years since one of the most IMPORTANT days in the history of the global monetary system. On August 15, 1971, President Richard Nixon announced that the United States would suspend the convertibility of U.S. dollars into gold, effectively closing the “gold window.” Paul Volcker was also present in 1971. Judy Shelton mentioned to me that Paul Volcker said he never wanted that to be the outcome and only wanted to close the system temporarily.
