History Chenille-type yarn is a relatively recent textile invention, dating to the 1780s in France, where artisans wove a leno (cross) weave fabric and then cut it into strips to create the characteristic fuzzy yarn.  Early French applications were decorative — trims on garments and upholstery.  The technique reached Scotland in the 1830s through Alexander Buchanan, a foreman at a Paisley fabric mill, who mass-produced "fuzzy shawls" by weaving tufts of coloured wool into a blanket, cutting the strips, and passing them over heated rollers to create a soft, frizzy texture.  James Templeton and William Quigley later refined the process to produce patterned chenille rugs, with Templeton patenting the method.  In AmericaCatherine Evans of Georgia revived hand-tufting methods in the late 1800s to create thick chenille bedspreads.  Her work sparked a cottage industry that transformed Dalton, Georgia into the "tufted bedspread capital" of the US by the 1920s.  The hand-tufting boom evolved into mechanised production — Glenn Dalton patented a single-needle tufting machine in 1936, and Roy Windham followed with a multiple-needle patent in the late 1930s — laying the groundwork for modern carpet manufacturing.  The modern method was developed in the US in 1895: a tightly wound core yarn is created, then short lengths of pile fibre are wrapped around it, twisted, cut, and steamed to set the tufts.  Industrial standards weren't formalised until the 1990s, when the Chenille International Manufacturers Association (CIMA) was formed.
