(King Prithu Incarnation)
In this Dasakam, Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri describes the story of King Prithu, who is regarded as an incarnation of an aspect of Lord Vishnu.
A Brief Overview
The Destruction of King Vena:
Vena was the son of Anga, who was born in the lineage of King Dhruva. Vena was extremely cruel and irreligious. He stopped the performance of yajnas and other righteous activities in his kingdom. Angered by his unrighteous rule, the sages cursed Vena and brought about his destruction.
The Incarnation of Prithu:
As there was no king to rule the kingdom, confusion and disorder prevailed. To restore peace and proper governance, the sages churned Vena's right arm using a churning stick. At that moment, King Prithu, an aspect of Lord Vishnu, manifested from Vena's arm.
Obtaining Prosperity from Mother Earth:
Because of King Vena's cruel rule, Mother Earth had concealed all her resources, including grains and medicinal herbs, within herself. As a result, famine prevailed everywhere.
King Prithu took up his bow and threatened Mother Earth. She assumed the form of a cow and fled from him. King Prithu then arranged for the resources needed by all living beings—food, grains, herbs, precious stones, and other forms of wealth—to be obtained from Mother Earth, who was represented as the divine cow. Thus, he restored prosperity to his people.
The Hundred Ashvamedha Yajnas:
King Prithu began performing one hundred Ashvamedha Yajnas. Indra, the king of the Devas, became jealous and repeatedly tried to obstruct the sacrifice by stealing the sacrificial horse.
Finally, Lord Vishnu appeared before King Prithu, blessed him, and granted him His divine vision.
Attaining Liberation:
King Prithu received profound spiritual teachings from the Sanat Kumaras. Following their guidance, he gradually turned his mind towards the Supreme Lord and ultimately attained the divine feet of Lord Vishnu.
Remembering this glorious incarnation and the noble life of King Prithu, Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri prays to Lord Guruvayurappan to remove his ailments and grant him His divine grace.

18-வது தசகம்: ப்ருது சரிதம் (King Prithu Incarnation)
இந்த தசகத்தில் மேல்பத்தூர் நாராயண பட்டத்திரி, பகவான் விஷ்ணுவின் அவதாரங்களில் ஒன்றான ப்ருது சக்கரவர்த்தியின் வரலாற்றை விவரிக்கிறார்.

வேனனின் அழிவு:
துருவ மன்னனின் வம்சத்தில் தோன்றிய அங்கன் என்பவனின் மகனான வேனன், மிகவும் கொடூரமானவனாகவும் நாஸ்திகனாகவும் இருந்தான். அவன் நாட்டில் யாகங்களையும் தர்ம காரியங்களையும் தடுத்தான். இதனால் முனிவர்கள் கோபமடைந்து, தங்களின் சாபத்தால் வேனனை அழித்தனர்.
ப்ருதுவின் அவதாரம்:
நாட்டில் அரசன் இல்லாததால் ஏற்பட்ட குழப்பத்தைப் போக்க, முனிவர்கள் வேனனின் வலது கையை உடைந்த கடையும் மத்தினால் கடைந்தனர். அப்போது பகவான் விஷ்ணுவின் அம்சமாக ப்ருது சக்கரவர்த்தி அவதரித்தார்.
பூமிதேவியிடமிருந்து வளம் பெறுதல்:
வேனனின் கொடுங்கோல் ஆட்சியால் பூமிதேவி தன் வளங்கள் (தானியங்கள், மூலிகைகள்) அனைத்தையும் தனக்குள்ளேயே மறைத்துக்கொண்டாள். இதனால் பஞ்சம் ஏற்பட்டது. ப்ருது மகாராஜா வில்லேந்தி பூமிதேவியை அச்சுறுத்த, பூமிதேவி பசுவின் வடிவம் எடுத்தாள். ப்ருது சக்கரவர்த்தி அனைத்து உயிர்களுக்கும் தேவையான உணவு, தானியங்கள், ரத்தினங்கள் போன்றவற்றை பூமிதேவியாகிய பசுவிடம் இருந்து கறந்து மக்களுக்கு வழங்கினார்.
100 அஸ்வமேத யாகம்:
ப்ருது மன்னர் நூறு அஸ்வமேத யாகங்களை செய்யத் தொடங்கியபோது, இந்திரன் பொறாமைப்பட்டு யாகக் குதிரையைக் கவர்ந்து சென்றான். இறுதியில் பகவான் விஷ்ணு நேரில் தோன்றி, ப்ருதுவுக்குக் காட்சியளித்து அருள் புரிந்தார்.
முக்தி:
சனத்குமாரர்களிடம் இருந்து ஆன்மீக உபதேசம் பெற்ற ப்ருது மன்னர், இறுதியில் பகவானின் திருவடிகளை அடைந்தார்.

A brief glimpse into the 17th Dasakam (Dhruva Charithram) of Srimad Narayaneeyam:
This Dasakam beautifully describes the unwavering devotion of the young boy Dhruva and how Lord Sriman Narayana bestowed His grace upon him.
* The Turn of Events Stemming from Insult: Dhruva was the son of King Uttanapada and his senior queen, Suniti. One day, when Dhruva desired to sit on his father's lap, his stepmother Suruchi stopped him harshly, saying, 'You are worthy of sitting on the royal lap only if you are born from my womb.'
* The Mother's Advice: To the distressed Dhruva, his mother Suniti imparted righteous wisdom, saying, 'Place your complete trust only in that Lord Narayana. Only through His grace can anything be attained.'
* Journey to the Forest: Listening to his mother's words, the five-year-old boy Dhruva immediately renounced his royal comforts and set out for the forest in search of Narayana.
* Narada's Instruction: On the way, Sage Narada tested and admired Dhruva's determination, instructing him in the Dwadasakshari Mantra — 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' — along with the method of meditation.
* Severe Penance: Reaching Madhuvana, Dhruva performed rigorous penance, controlling his breath and standing on one leg. The intensity of his penance shook the entire universe, alarming even the Devas.
* Vision of the Lord: Pleased with Dhruva's penance, Lord Sriman Narayana appeared before him riding on Garuda, holding His conch and discus.
* Wisdom and Praise: overwhelmed by the divine sight, Dhruva stood speechless. When the Lord gently touched Dhruva's cheek with His holy conch, Panchajanya, Dhruva was instantly blessed with full Vedic wisdom and praised the Lord with deep devotion.
* The Boon Granted: The Lord granted Dhruva the supreme 'Dhruva Pada' (the Pole Star) — a realm above all other worlds — and ultimately blessed him with liberation (Moksha).
This is a wonderful Dasakam that illustrates how devotion and perseverance can win the Lord's complete grace at any age. | 104 |

காட்டை நோக்கிய பயணம்:
தாயின் சொல்லைக் கேட்ட 5 வயது சிறுவன் துருவன், உடனடியாகத் தன் ராஜபோகங்களைத் துறந்து, நாராயணனைத் தேடிக் காட்டிற்குப் புறப்பட்டான்.
நாரதரின் உபதேசம்:
வழியில் துருவனின் உறுதியைச் சோதித்து மெச்சிய நாரத முனிவர், அவனுக்கு "ஓம் நமோ பகவதே வாசுதேவாய" எனும் த்வாதசாக்ஷரி மந்திரத்தையும், தியான முறையையும் உபதேசித்தார்.
கடுமையான தவம்:
மதுவனத்தை அடைந்த துருவன், மூச்சை அடக்கி, தீவிர தவம் புரிந்தான். அவனது தவத்தின் ஆற்றலால் உலகமே அசைந்து, தேவர்கள் அஞ்சினர்.
பகவானின் தரிசனம்:
துருவனின் தவத்திற்கு மெச்சி, ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் கருட வாகனத்தில் சங்கு, சக்கரத்தோடு அவனுக்குக் காட்சியளித்தார்.
ஞானமும் ஸ்துதியும்:
பகவானைக் கண்டதும் பேச முடியாமல் நின்ற துருவனின் கன்னத்தில், இறைவன் தன் பாஞ்சஜன்யம் எனும் சங்கினால் தொட, துருவனுக்கு உடனடியாக அனைத்து வேத ஞானமும் கிடைத்தது. அவன் இறைவனைப் பரவசத்துடன் துதித்தான்.
அளிக்கப்பட்ட வரம்:
பகவான் துருவனுக்கு அனைத்து லோகங்களுக்கும் மேலான "துருவ பதவியை" (துருவ நட்சத்திரம்) வரமாக அளித்து, இறுதியில் முக்தியையும் வழங்கி அருளினார்.
பக்தியும், விடாமுயற்சியும் இருந்தால் எந்த வயதிலும் இறைவனின் பூரண அருளைப் பெற முடியும் என்பதை உணர்த்தும் மிக அற்புதமான தசகம் இது. | 81 |

| 20 | The 16th Dashakam of Srimad Narayaneeyam describes the Nara-Narayana incarnation—one of the most important avatars of Lord Vishnu—and highlights its glories.
Purpose of the Incarnation:
Sriman Narayana incarnated in two forms, 'Nara' and 'Narayana', as the sons of Dharma Deva and Murti Devi. For the welfare of the world and to reveal the greatness of penance (tapas) to mankind, they engaged in severe austerities at Badrikashrama (Badrinath).
Indra's Panic and Testing:
Fearing the power of Nara-Narayana's intense penance, Indra sent Kamadeva (Cupid), the spring season (Vasanta), and celestial nymphs (Apsaras) to Badrikashrama to disrupt their meditation.
Appearance of Urvashi:
Unmoved and serene in his spiritual power, Narayana patted his thigh (Uru means thigh) and created 'Urvashi'—a woman whose exquisite beauty surpassed that of all the celestial maidens. Witnessing this, Indra's messengers hung their heads in shame, realizing their own ignorance.
Narayana's Magnanimity:
Instead of cursing the Apsaras who came to disturb his penance out of ignorance, Narayana accepted them with love and compassion. Furthermore, he presented the newly created Urvashi as a gift to Indra and sent them off graciously.
Benefit of the Dashakam (Prayer):
Narayana Bhattathiri bows to and praises the lotus feet of Nara-Narayana, which grant pure devotion and wisdom while helping overcome demoniac qualities like lust and anger.
Reciting this Dashakam bestows profound blessings, enhancing good health and ensuring a divine vision of Lord Guruvayurappan. | 114 |
