India finally got itself featured on the Commonwealth Games leaderboard as para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar brought the first medal for the country in the 2026 edition of the tournament. The 28-year-old won the bronze medal in the men's heavyweight event on Friday night. On the other hand, Sudhir, the other participant in the event, finished sixth. In the men's heavyweight final, Jhandu appeared in Group B. He first lifted 181 kg in his first attempt and then went on to lift 190kg in his next attempt. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved a draft bill that will pave the way for harsher punishments—such as a jail time of up to 10 years and stiffer penalties of up to ₹10 crore— for those convicted of paper leaks, said people aware of the details. An Indian seafarer was killed in a drone strike on a ship in the Black Sea last week, officials said on Friday, even as an LPG carrier Disha came under missile attack near Iran, leaving the vessel temporarily without manoeuvrability. MV Omorfi was attacked while transiting the Black Sea, reportedly in Russian territorial waters, on July 18, the external affairs ministry said in a statement.
