SPECIES IN NEWS
🐗 The Tiny Architects of the Wild: Pygmy Hogs 🐗
Pygmy Hog – the smallest, shyest wild pig species, scientifically named Porcula salvania. Once thought to be extinct, these elusive creatures were rediscovered in 1971 in the Barnadi Wildlife Sanctuary, and since 1996, captive breeding and conservation efforts have been helping them make a comeback!
✨ Fun Facts ✨
The pygmy hog is one of the few mammals that builds its own nest, complete with a roof! 🏡
They live hidden in tall, dense grass, only found in Assam’s Manas and Barnadi Wildlife Sanctuaries.
Males are slightly bigger than females, and both have bristly coats over grey-brown skin.
🌍 Conservation Status 🌍
IUCN: Endangered 🆘
CITES: Appendix I 🛑
Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: Schedule I 🐾
🛡 Despite these protections, pygmy hogs face severe threats due to habitat loss and illegal hunting.

🦄 Khur: The Survivor of the Wild! 🦄
Did you know?
Khur / Indian Wild Ass—has made a remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction? 🦓
Once widespread across south Asia, It nearly disappeared due to diseases like African Horse Sickness and Surra, but now these majestic creatures now call the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat their only home in India. 🌍
Facts on Khur:
Scientific Name: Equus hemionus khur
Other Names: Ghudkhur, Indian Onager
Features: About size of a zebra, these creatures can live up to 21 years! 🌿 They can sprint up to 70 km/h
Diet: Mostly grasses, but during harsh summers, they rely on Prosopis pods🌾
Conservation Status:
IUCN: Endangered
Wildlife Protection Act 1972: Schedule I
Sanctuary: The Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch was established in 1973 to protect these beautiful creatures, home to about 6,000 Khurs today. 🌱
They still face threats from human activities like salt farming, agriculture, and cattle grazing.🌿

🌍✨ A Glimpse into Earth's Future After the Red Giant Phase ✨🌍
Imagine a world orbiting a faint, dying star – this could be Earth’s destiny billions of years from now! A recent discovery of an Earth-like planet circling a white dwarf star offers a sneak peek into what might happen after our Sun’s fiery Red Giant phase.
🔍 What We Know?
🚀 A rocky planet 1.9 times the mass of Earth is found orbiting twice the Earth-Sun distance, now frozen as its white dwarf star dims.
⭐️ The star, once 1-2 times the mass of our Sun, exhausted its nuclear fuel and collapsed into a white dwarf.
❄️ The planet, once potentially habitable, now orbits 2.1 times its original distance, in a freezing state due to the faint light of its star.
☀️ Our Sun’s Red Giant Phase
In 7 billion years, our Sun will expand into a Red Giant, puffing up to engulf inner planets, potentially including Earth. Eventually, it will shed its outer layers, shrinking into a dense white dwarf. The orbits of planets will expand, and Earth may be pushed farther from the Sun, possibly surviving as a distant, frigid world.
💡 Significance
This discovery hints that Earth could escape total destruction during the Sun’s Red Giant phase, orbiting as a cold, rocky planet, much like the one we’ve now observed. Could life cling to the farthest reaches of the solar system’s future?

🌊 Octopus and Fish: A Team in the Ocean 🐙🐠
🔍 Did you know?
Octopuses and fish work together to hunt? Research on the day octopus (Octopus cyanea) and fish like goatfish and groupers reveals a cross-species collaboration with no clear leader! 🦑🐟
🐠 Fish explore and guide, while the octopus decides when to move. The result? Higher success rates in capturing prey when they work together, showing that the relationship is far from hierarchical!
📊 Studies even suggest that octopuses adjust their foraging tactics based on their fish partners.
For example, octopuses are more focused and efficient when partnered with blue goatfish but less so with blacktip groupers.
🌍 Significance: This partnership exemplifies the complexity of decision-making in marine life, where each species contributes to the goal of efficient hunting.

🧬 Supramolecular Self-Assembly: A Breakthrough in Nanotechnology! 🌟
🔍 Did you know that tiny molecules can self-organize into larger, complex structures without any external direction?
🌿 This process, called supramolecular self-assembly, is a new frontier in material science.
🧪 Research Highlight:
Two Bengaluru-based institutes under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, have made a significant breakthrough! 🚀
They explored the behavior of molecules called chiral amphiphilic naphthalene diimide derivatives (NDI-L and NDI-D) and experimented with two methods of assembly:
1️⃣ Solution Phase Assembly - Results in spherical nanoparticles with unique optical properties.
2️⃣ Air-Water Interface Assembly - Creates flat, two-dimensional layers without the same optical traits.
🌍 Why It Matters?
This research reveals that the environment where molecules assemble plays a vital role in shaping their structure and properties. This could revolutionize industries like biomedicine (targeted drug delivery) and electronics (faster, efficient devices)!
Advantages of Supramolecular Self-Assembly:
Precision in Structure Formation: It allows the creation of well-defined, complex structures at the molecular level without external intervention.
Versatility: Can adapt to various environments, enabling the formation of different types of materials (e.g., nanoparticles, 2D layers).
Cost-Effective: Since it occurs naturally, the process can reduce costs associated with manufacturing intricate materials.
Applications:
Biomedicine: Targeted drug delivery systems.💊
Electronics: Development of faster and more efficient devices.🔌
Material Science: Creation of organic nanomaterials for new technologies.👩🔬
