A student's experience of taking the test at NOET
@aalaeeTOEFLiBT

Irritable, cross, complaining, fretful, ill-humored and impatient, difficult toplease.
There are peevish moods, peevish remarks, and peevish looks. A peeveis something that irritates or annoys: “Her pet peeve is a wet towel left on the bed.” Peevish means irritable, ill-humored, full of complaints.

Word of the Day: TAWDRY (TAW-dree, rhymes with Audrey)
Cheap and showy, gaudy, garish, sleazy.
Legend has it that tawdry comes from the phrase “tawdry lace,” a corruption of “Saint Audrey lace,” a type of lace sold at Saint Audrey's fair in England. Apparently the lace was of inferior quality, thus over time the
word tawdry came to mean cheap and showy. Today the word may be used both literally and figuratively. A person may wear tawdry clothing or have a tawdry reputation.

In the lecture, the professor talks about two reasons of the reduced water clarity. The first reason is sediment. Let's say there's a railway being built around a lake, with all the construction going on, a lot of soil gets washed down into the lake and thus reduce the water clarity of the lake.
The second reason is the extra nutrients of plants. For example, farmers today fertilize the plants with fertilizers and the plants get a lot of nutrients, thus they would grow faster and better. But over time they cover up the surface of the lake and this blocks the sunlight which reduces the clarity of the water as well.

The woman's problem is that she's got a part-time job and she was late for work because of the traffic congestion, the situation will last like a week so she might be late again. There are two possible solutions for her. The first one is to leave for work 15 minutes earlier. And the second one is to change a shift at work. If I were in her shoes, I'd go for the second solution because I'm sure she can work it out with one of her colleagues, they'll understand if she asks nicely, plus it's only a part-time job, she doesn't have to take it that seriously. I personally don't recommend the other solution because the 15 minutes she misses can be really important, she will miss out on some pretty valuable things if she leaves early.

In the lecture, the professor introduces the concept of eminent domain which means under certain circumstances the government has the right to reimburse the private households for their property to maximize the benefit of the country. He offers his own example to illustrate it. A couple of years ago the government decided to build a railroad to alleviate the traffic condition around the area, and this decision would affect his uncle's property. The government then tore down his uncle's house and reimbursed him for it. At first his uncle was very upset about it. But over time, the traffic condition around that area did get a lot better.

The university is planning to shut down the radio station due to two reasons. The first one is that few students listen to the radio. And the second reason is that it's getting more and more difficult to get volunteers to do the programs. In the conversation, the woman disagrees with the plan. Her first reason is that students nowadays prefer smart phones or the internet, they don't listen to the radio any more, the university should think about using the Internet as a platform to reach out to students. As for the second reason, the woman points out that students may not be interested in doing the programs now, but things will definitely change if the university could offer some extra credits to the volunteers.

In the lecture, the professor talks about the characters of rainforest. The first one is warm climate. Take orchids as an example, orchids are pretty sensitive to the temperature, they can hardly survive the cold, but since the climate in the rainforest is relatively warm, the orchids can grow very well there. The other one is about canopy. The canopy created by layers and layers of leaves blocks the sunlight, so the environment on the ground is quite different from the environment over the canopy. A plant that can survive at that height will die once it falls onto the ground.

The woman's problem is that she's the president of the camping club and she's supposed to take everyone camping this weekend, unfortunately the weather report said that it would rain. There are two possible solutions. The first one is to postpone the trip and go camping next weekend instead. And the second solution is to go this weekend and remind everyone to bring a raincoat. If I were in her shoes, I'd go for the first solution because her club members would probably understand since it's not really something within her control. I personally don't recommend the other solution because if it really rains, the members will have to stay inside the tents, what's the point of going camping if you can't even go outside?
