A huge man in a larger-than-life SUV opens the door on a red light where a small boy of 4 years roams with a brown hat, arms extending for alms and his mother’s kajal on his nose, masquerading and playing ploys in front of sullen eyes beset in cars. The said ‘big man’ spits a grand red-carpet onto the road. The small boy stands on the opposite side, knocking at the conscience of just another set of eyes that choose to alienate him. No alms but he still smiles and starts to walk without realizing the unkempt welcome laid by the ‘big man’ on the road under him. He realises what he’s walked on but the smile doesn’t vanish from his gaunt cheeks. He’s used to it. Please know that what seems like a free-for-all road to you might be the mainstream livelihood of someone who wasn’t born into the same lush house. Before laying red carpets on roads or leaving designer wrappers in public spaces, know that only if you had been dealt a different hand by fate, it could have been your home too. I really wish to publically shame the said ‘big man’ but I’ll keep the derision private, hoping that this ‘second chance’ works on him. I’m sharing this here to highlight that having zero civic sense destroys not just aesthetic but someone’s right to a life of dignity. What’s the point of all that green in your wallet if you keep painting the town red? Manners>Money. Always.
