 🔐 Ledger Is Bringing Zcash Ironwood Support to Hardware Wallets
Zcash Labs has announced a new funding agreement with Ledger to bring the latest Zcash Ironwood shielded pool to Ledger hardware devices.
Under the agreement, Zcash Labs is committing $80,000 to fund the additional engineering work required to adapt Ledger’s existing Zcash integration from Orchard to Ironwood.
Once completed, ZEC holders will be able to self-custody Zcash in the Ironwood pool using their Ledger devices — combining hardware-wallet security with Zcash’s latest shielded infrastructure.
The agreement is separate from Grant #152 and specifically covers the additional development work created by the transition to Ironwood.
Another important step toward making private ZEC storage more accessible through mainstream hardware wallets.

What happens when private money becomes as easy to spend as it is to hold?
In a recent discussion, Mert highlighted an increasingly important part of the Zcash thesis: shielded ZEC can become a private source of liquidity for the wider crypto economy.
With wallets such as Zodl and infrastructure powered by NEAR Intents, a user can start with ZEC held privately in a shielded wallet and convert it into supported assets across other networks — without manually navigating exchanges, bridges and multiple transactions.
The concept is simple:
🔒 Store privately in Zcash
↓
🔄 Route and convert across chains
↓
💳 Receive or spend in the asset and network needed
For example, shielded ZEC can serve as the source asset while CrossPay handles conversion and settlement into an asset such as USDC on Solana.
That represents an important evolution in Zcash UX.
Instead of privacy being something users sacrifice the moment they want to interact with the broader crypto ecosystem, Zcash can increasingly function as the private starting point for that activity.
There is an important distinction: assets received on transparent networks remain subject to the transparency of those networks. The breakthrough is that the user's shielded Zcash balance and Zcash address don't need to become publicly exposed simply to initiate the payment flow.
This expands the Zcash thesis beyond private savings:
Private digital money → usable cross-chain liquidity.
And as this infrastructure improves, the difference between holding privately and spending conveniently continues to shrink.

 ⚡ ZCASH PERPETUAL VOLUME SURGES — ZEC REACHES 18% OF BITCOIN’S VOLUME
Zcash is seeing a sharp increase in derivatives trading activity.
According to ZECStats data from Hyperliquid, $ZEC recorded approximately $397.6 million in 24-hour perpetual trading volume, compared with roughly $2.2 billion for Bitcoin.
That puts ZEC at an impressive 18.1% of BTC’s perpetual volume on the platform — despite the enormous difference in market capitalization.
📈 The bigger story is the acceleration.
ZEC perpetual volume has climbed from roughly $38 million in mid-August to around $400 million, representing an increase of more than 1,000% within a month.
The surge also coincides with the launch of Grayscale’s Zcash ETF (ZCSH) in late August, bringing additional institutional visibility and liquidity to ZEC. While the ETF cannot be identified as the sole cause of the increase, the timing highlights a broader rise in market participation around Zcash.
For ZEC, this is another signal worth watching: liquidity and trading activity are expanding far faster than they were just weeks ago.

 🛡 NU7 RESULTS: WHERE THE ZCASH ECOSYSTEM AGREES — AND WHERE IT DOESN’T
The latest NU7 polling results provide a clearer picture of how different parts of the Zcash ecosystem want Network Upgrade 7 to move forward.
Across ZCAP, ZecHub DAO, Zcash Engineering Caucus, Zcash Brasil and coinholders, several strong areas of alignment have emerged:
⚡ FASTER BLOCKS
There is broad support for reducing Zcash’s block target spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. ZCAP voted 70.4% YES.
🌱 SPROUT / v4 DEPRECATION
The groups generally favor disabling legacy v4 transactions with NU7. Among ZCAP members, 48.5% chose immediate deactivation at NU7 activation — the largest option.
🚀 DON’T DELAY NU7
There is also strong support for moving NU7 forward rather than waiting indefinitely for every planned feature. 63.7% of ZCAP voted to ship NU7 as soon as possible and remove features not implemented by the September 30 deadline.
But on ZEC monetary policy, a major divide appears.
🪙 HALVINGS vs. SMOOTH ISSUANCE
ZCAP was almost evenly split:
→ Smooth issuance: 42.2%
→ Preserve halvings: 40.0%
Coinholders, however, delivered a dramatically different signal:
→ 98.9% favored preserving Zcash’s existing halvings.
🔄 NSM REISSUANCE
The divergence continues over when ZEC removed from circulation through the Network Sustainability Mechanism should begin returning through future block rewards.
ZCAP’s largest group — 49.6% — favored starting as soon as possible.
Coinholders overwhelmingly favored waiting until February 2031 — 96.6%.
📊 Around 2.4 million ZEC participated in the coinholder poll, while 135 of 198 ZCAP members participated in the ZCAP vote.
The message from NU7 governance is becoming clearer: there is substantial alignment around technical improvements such as faster blocks and moving NU7 forward — but the future of Zcash’s issuance policy remains far more contested.

 ⚡ Grayscale Research Head: What If Zcash Reached 5% of Bitcoin’s Value?
Zcash could theoretically trade around $4,000–$4,500 per ZEC if its network valuation reached roughly 5% of Bitcoin’s, according to an example discussed by Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale.
Speaking about the growing importance of financial privacy, Pandl argued that crypto markets still assign a surprisingly low valuation to this use case.
🔐 His thesis: privacy may be undervalued.
Zcash combines a Bitcoin-like monetary model with optional shielded transactions powered by zero-knowledge cryptography — allowing users to protect sensitive financial information on-chain.

It’s a legitimate question — but there’s an important distinction.

 ⚠️ IS YOUR ZEC STILL IN THE OLD ORCHARD POOL?
Zcash’s transition from Orchard to Ironwood is well underway — but not every ZEC has made the move yet.
Ironwood went live on July 28 as Zcash’s new shielded pool, following the discovery of a vulnerability in Orchard’s zero-knowledge circuit.
🔒 WHAT CHANGED?
Orchard is now permanently closed to new incoming funds.
ZEC already held in Orchard remains accessible, but those funds must leave through the migration “turnstile” — either into the new Ironwood pool or to a transparent address.
Your Zcash address itself does not need to change. Ironwood reuses existing Orchard receivers, meaning compatible wallets can handle the transition without requiring a new address.
🔍 HOW DO I KNOW WHICH POOL MY ZEC IS IN?
First, make sure you are running the latest version of your Zcash wallet.
Depending on the wallet, you may be able to see whether your shielded balance is held in Orchard or Ironwood directly in the wallet interface or balance details.
If your wallet supports Ironwood and has already completed the migration, your funds should be in the new shielded pool. Some wallets handle this process automatically, while others may require user action.
If you are unsure, check your wallet provider’s latest Ironwood migration instructions before moving any funds.
🛡️ WHY IRONWOOD MATTERS
Ironwood was introduced to restore stronger assurances around Zcash’s shielded supply.
Its migration mechanism also allows the network to progressively verify that the ZEC supply remains consistent with Zcash’s 21 million coin limit.
📱 WHAT SHOULD USERS DO?
Update your wallet and confirm that it supports Ironwood.
If you still have an Orchard balance, follow your wallet provider’s migration procedure. Your ZEC has not disappeared — Orchard is withdrawal-only and funds can still be moved out.
Never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone offering to “help” with migration.
Ironwood is now the future of shielded Zcash.

Zcash is seeing a sharp increase in its share of overall cryptocurrency trading activity.
According to data from ZecStats, ZEC currently accounts for roughly 3.5% of total spot trading volume across the exchanges covered by the dataset — approaching some of the highest levels recorded over the past year.
The move is particularly notable because ZEC’s market-volume share stood near 1.2–1.3% during parts of July. Since then, trading activity has accelerated significantly relative to the broader crypto market.

A MODEL PUTS ZEC TO THE TEST
Zcash is often described as “encrypted Bitcoin.”
Both networks share a maximum supply of 21 million coins — but scarcity alone doesn’t justify similar valuations.
A model developed by trader and analyst filbfilb asks a more interesting question:
How much of Bitcoin’s value could Zcash justify based on actual network usage?
📊 THE NUMBERS
Using Zcash’s transaction activity relative to Bitcoin, the model produces an implied valuation of roughly:
$944 per ZEC
But Zcash has something Bitcoin doesn’t: shielded transactions.
Because their transferred values are private, their full economic activity cannot be directly observed. By incorporating an estimate for this hidden activity, the model produces several hypothetical convergence scenarios:
• 25% BTC value capture → ~$1,870 ZEC
• 50% BTC value capture → ~$3,740 ZEC
• Full blended convergence → ~$7,480 ZEC
⚠️ These are not price targets.
They are theoretical valuations based on different assumptions about how much of Bitcoin’s network value Zcash could eventually capture.
And that is where the model becomes interesting.
Bitcoin proved that digital scarcity can carry enormous monetary value. Zcash combines similar scarcity with something Bitcoin does not provide natively: strong on-chain financial privacy.
The real question isn’t whether Zcash can simply follow Bitcoin.
It’s how much the market will ultimately value privacy.

Zcash is approaching an important governance deadline.
Voting on the proposed scope of Network Upgrade 7 (NU7) closes on September 14 at 19:00 UTC.
But what exactly is being decided — and who can vote?
WHAT IS BEING VOTED ON?
The process is helping determine which proposed changes should move forward as part of NU7.
Among the major items under consideration are:
⚡ Faster Blocks
Reducing Zcash's target block time from approximately 75 seconds to 25 seconds, enabling faster transaction confirmations.
📉 Issuance Smoothing
Changes intended to make ZEC issuance smoother rather than concentrating issuance into larger periodic events.
⏱ Reissuance Start Date
A governance decision concerning when the proposed reissuance mechanism should begin.
🪦 Sprout Deprecation
Progress toward retiring Zcash's oldest shielded protocol, Sprout.
🔧 NU7 Scope & Readiness
Voters are also weighing which proposed features are sufficiently mature and appropriate for inclusion in NU7.
WHO CAN VOTE?
There are two parallel governance mechanisms:
🪙 Coinholder Voting
ZEC holders can participate through the official coinholder voting process by proving control of ZEC used for the vote.
🏛 ZCAP Voting
Members of the Zcash Community Advisory Panel (ZCAP) participate separately through the Zcash Foundation's governance process.
The two results provide different signals: one from participating ZEC holders and another from an established community advisory body.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Once voting closes, the results will provide an important governance signal regarding the desired scope of NU7.
They do not mean every proposed change automatically activates immediately.
Any changes ultimately included in NU7 still have to go through the necessary specification, development, testing and network-upgrade process before reaching Zcash mainnet.

 🛡 ZCASH PROVER REACHES NEW FORMAL VERIFICATION MILESTONE
Zcash has reached another milestone in formally verified cryptography.
Project Tachyon announced that, thanks to work by Marius Margulis, the new zk-SNARK prover in Zakura — also used by Vizor Wallet — is the first Zcash prover with a machine-checked Lean proof of statistical honest-verifier zero-knowledge (SHVZK).
In simple terms, a key zero-knowledge property of the prover has now been formally proven and checked using Lean, a theorem-proving system designed to verify mathematical proofs.
This is an important distinction: the announcement does not mean that the entire Zakura implementation has been formally verified. The new proof specifically covers the prover's statistical honest-verifier zero-knowledge property.
The milestone follows Project Tachyon's formal verification work on Ironwood, where machine-checked Lean proofs for supply soundness were published in July.
Together, these developments highlight a growing emphasis within the Zcash ecosystem on using formal methods to strengthen the foundations of its privacy technology.
For Zcash, privacy isn't just about implementation — increasingly, it's about proving the mathematics behind it.

 📊 ZCASH SPOT VOLUME SURGES ACROSS MAJOR EXCHANGES
Zcash trading activity has accelerated sharply, with ZEC spot volume rising across multiple major exchanges.
Data from ZecStats shows that recent weekly spot volume has climbed into the multi-billion-dollar range, with the strongest weeks approaching $4 billion across the tracked major venues.
Binance remains the largest contributor, while substantial activity is also visible across Coinbase, Poloniex, KuCoin, Kraken, OKX and Gate.
The broader trend is particularly notable: after considerably lower volumes through parts of July and early August, trading activity expanded sharply during the latest ZEC market move.
ZecStats’ latest metrics also show exchange trading volume at $1.19B on a 7-day trailing basis, up 45.3% from one week earlier and roughly 619% from 28 days earlier.
Unlike aggregated volume estimates, the exchange chart is built from the individual venues’ public market data, providing a clearer view of where ZEC spot activity is actually taking place.
Rising volume across several exchanges suggests the recent increase in Zcash market activity is not isolated to a single trading venue.
