Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in the News
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in southern Iran has drawn attention amid the recent conflict in West Asia due to concerns over its safety. Located on the Persian Gulf coast, it is Iran's only operational nuclear power plant and was built with Russian assistance.
Any disruption at Bushehr could affect regional energy security, marine ecosystems of the Persian Gulf, and maritime trade routes. The location also underlines the strategic importance of coastal nuclear infrastructure in geopolitically sensitive regions.

Satellite pic shows Godzilla El Niño wave in Pacific Ocean
A NASA satellite has captured massive wave of heat driving an El Niño event from beneath the surface in Pacific Ocean. New observations reveal unusually high sea levels stretching across equatorial Pacific. Researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said conditions closely resemble those seen during 1997, the year one of the strongest El Niño events, nicknamed 'Godzilla Niño', developed.
Ladakh's Growing Role in Astronomy
Ladakh was recently in the news after the Union Budget 2026 announced funding for the National Large Solar Telescope (NLST) and other astronomy facilities in the region.
The proposed NLST will be located at Merak, while Hanle—home to India's first Dark Sky Reserve—continues to emerge as a major centre for astronomical research. High altitude, clear skies, low humidity, and minimal light pollution make Ladakh ideal for space observation.
The location is a good example of how physical geography influences the placement of scientific infrastructure.

What is Godzilla El Niño?
A powerful El Niño developing in the Pacific Ocean is being referred to as "Godzilla El Niño" because of its unusual intensity.
The term is generally used when sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific rise by around 2.5°C or more above the long-term average.
Such strong El Niño events can alter weather patterns across the world, triggering droughts in some regions and floods in others.
They also tend to push global temperatures to record highs. In India, El Niño years are associated with below-normal southwest monsoon rainfall, which can affect agriculture and water avilability.
