سبّ رجلٌ الإمامَ وكيعًا فلم يُجبه ! ‏فقيل له: ألا تردُّ عليه ! فقال: ولِمَ تَعَلَّمنا العلمَ إذًا ؟!

🤍🤍🤍 A man insulted Imam Wakīʿ, but he did not respond. Someone asked him, “Won’t you answer him?” He replied, “Then what did we seek knowledge for?”

— Rawḍat al-ʿUqalāʾ, p. 166

He meant that the true benefit of knowledge is to teach a person patience, self-control, and noble character.‏

قال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية رحمه الله: ‏«وقد يكونُ الرجلُ من أذكياءِ الناسِ وأحدِّهم نظرًا،ويُعميه اللهُ عن أظهرِ الأشياء! ‏وقد يكونُ من أبلدِ الناسِ وأضعفِهم نظرًا،ويهديه لما اختُلِفَ فيه من الحق بإذنه. فلا حول ولا قوة إلا به. ‏فمن اتّكل على نظره واستدلاله، أو عقله ومعرفته:خُذِل.» 📒

— درء تعارض العقل والنقل.

🤍 Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “A Person may be among the smartest and most insightful of people, yet Allah may blind him to the clearest truths. And another person may be among the least intelligent and weakest in understanding, yet Allah guides him, by His permission, to the truth over which people differ. There is no power and no strength except through Him. So whoever relies on his own reasoning, deduction, intellect, or knowledge will be forsaken.” 📒

قِرَاءَةُ آثَارِ الصَّالِحِينَ = مُجَالَسَتُهُمْ! 📒 قال أبو داود رحمه الله: قلتُ لعبدِ اللهِ بنِ المبارك: مَن تُجالس؟ قال: أُجالسُ شعبةَ وسفيانَ، رحم الله الجميع. قال أبو داود: يعني: أنظرُ في كُتُبِهما. 🤍 Reading the works of the righteous = Keeping their company! 📒 Abū Dāwūd رحمه الله said: I asked ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak, “Whom do you keep company with?” He replied, “I keep company with Shuʿbah and Sufyān. May Allah have mercy on them all.” Abū Dāwūd then explained: “Meaning: I read their books.”
