While working on a map of Alan archaeological groupings in the Caucasus, I noticed a striking similarity between the subgroups of the Koban culture and the later Alan subgroups. This resemblance may be attributed to enduring geographic barriers, or it may indicate that the pre-Alan populations of the Koban culture - though sharing a common material culture - were already divided into distinct ethnolinguistic units. Linguistic evidence supports this view: Svan loanwords are found in Nakh languages and vice versa, suggesting prolonged contact. It is therefore plausible that the Eastern Koban group served as a "container" for Nakh-speaking peoples, while the Central Koban group was predominantly Svan-speaking, with the Svan-Nakh contact zone lying along the border between these two archaeological groups. This framework may explain why the Alan period exhibits archaeological subgroup differentiation similar to that of the Koban era. Under this model: The Western Koban group was a mixture of Svan immigrants and descendants of the Post-Catacomb culture (associated with haplogroup R1b, which is found in significant frequencies among Balkars and Digors). The Central Koban group consisted of relatively "pure" Svans - possibly the Saens of Ossetian folklore. The Eastern Koban group was Nakh-speaking.
