“Stones are about to descend upon you from the heavens! I say to you, ‘The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said,’ and you say to me, ‘Abū Bakr and ʿUmar said!’”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله said:
“I am astonished at a people who know the chain of transmission of a ḥadīth and its authenticity, yet they still follow the opinion of Sufyān al-Thawrī, while Allāh, the Most High, says: فَلۡيَحۡذَرِ ٱلَّذِينَ يُخَالِفُونَ عَنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦٓ أَن تُصِيبَهُمۡ فِتۡنَةٌ أَوۡ يُصِيبَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ‘Let those who oppose his (the Messenger’s) command beware, lest a fitnah befall them or a painful punishment be inflicted upon them.’”
Do you know what fitnah is? Fitnah is shirk. May be the rejection of some of his words would cause one to have doubts and deviation in his heart and thereby be destroyed. It is narrated from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim رضي الله عنه that he said:
I heard the Prophet ﷺ read this verse: “They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah, and Messiah - son of Maryam, while they were commanded to worship none but One Ilāh (God-Allah) Lā ilāha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).” (9:31) So I said to him ﷺ, “Verily, we did not worship them,” to which he replied: “Did they not make ḥarām what Allah made ḥalāl so you then made it ḥarām, and (did they not) make ḥalāl what Allah made ḥarām and you therefore made it ḥalāl?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “That is worshipping them.”

Imām Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله said:
If the servant perfects his tawḥīd and his sincerity (ikhlāṣ) to Allāh within it, and he fulfils all of its conditions with his heart, his tongue, and his limbs, or with his heart and tongue at the time of death, this necessitates the forgiveness of all previous sins and prevents him entirely from entering the Fire. So whoever truly realizes the statement of tawḥīd in his heart, it expels from him everything besides Allāh in terms of love, veneration, exaltation, reverence, fear, hope, and tawakkul. At that point, it burns away all his sins and errors, even if they were like the foam of the sea, and it may even transform them into good deeds, as has preceded regarding the changing of evil deeds into good ones. For indeed this tawḥīd is the greatest elixir, such that if even an atom’s weight of it were placed upon mountains of sins and errors, it would turn them into good deeds.

“Most of his criticism directed at the virtuous and the ascetics were justified. However, in some of them he was a Mujtahid. His Madhhab allows excuse for people, and he did not declare anyone a disbeliever except after the establishment of proof against him. He supported the pure Sunnah and the Salafī way arguing with proofs, matters the like of which none preceded him. He used expressions from which both the earlier and later scholars had refrained and feared, but he dared to do so. Until a group of scholars from Egypt and Syria rose up against him and they declared him an innovator, debated him, and opposed him, but he was steadfast speaking the bitter truth to which his ijtihād, incomparable intellect, and vast knowledge of the Sunnah led him. He was known for piety, quick understanding, fear of Allāh, and veneration for the sacred limits of Allāh. Between him and them occurred many conflicts, but Allāh saved him, for he was constant in supplicating, frequent in calling for help, strong in tawakkul, and firm of heart. The common people loved him, for he was devoted to benefiting them night and day, by his tongue and his pen.” He continues the mention of his bravery, how he stood up with boldness and courage against the Tatars. He also mentions that he neither married nor took a concubine-slave, and nothing is known of his possessions except little.
I (Ibn Rajab) say:
“The Shaykh once traveled by mule/horse to Egypt to alert the Sulṭān to act at the time of the coming of the Tatars. He recited the āyāt concerning jihād and said: ‘If you abandon Syrians, then indeed Allāh will raise up for them those who will support them, and He will replace you with someone else,’ and he recited: ﴿وَإِن تَتَوَلَّوْا يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَكُونُوٓا أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ﴾ and: ﴿إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَيْـًٔا﴾ This reached Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd (teacher of al-Dhahabī), who was the judge at the time, and he approved of it. He was impressed by this inference and was astonished that the Shaykh would confront the Sulṭān with such words. As for the Shaykh’s trials, they are many, and explaining them would take long.”

“There is no doubt that remembrances (adhkār) and supplications (daʿawāt) are among the most virtuous acts of worship. Acts of worship are built upon divine prescription (tawqīf) and emulation (ittibāʿ), not upon desire or innovation. Thus, the Prophetic supplications and remembrances are the very best that a seeker can aspire to in prayer and mention; the one who treads their path is upon a way of security and safety. The benefits and results that follow are such that no tongue can express, nor can any human fully encompass. Other remembrances, however, may be prohibited, disliked, or may even contain elements of polytheism (shirk) that most people do not perceive — a subject the details of which are lengthy. As for adopting a non-legislated wird (regular spiritual portion) or establishing a non-legislated practice of remembrance: this is among the matters that are forbidden. Furthermore, within the legislated supplications and remembrances lie the pinnacle of sound aspirations and the ultimate noble objectives. No one turns away from them toward other newly-invented and innovated remembrances except one who is ignorant, negligent, or a transgressor.”

"O My servants, you commit sins by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so ask Me for forgiveness and I will forgive you." "يا عِبادي، إنَّكُم لَن تَبلُغوا ضَرِّي فتَضُرُّوني، ولَن تَبلُغوا نَفعي فتَنفَعوني..." "O My servants, you cannot harm Me so as to cause Me harm, nor can you benefit Me so as to benefit Me." "O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any one of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything." "O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, were to stand on a single plain and ask Me, and I gave each one what he asked, that would not decrease what I have, except as a needle decreases when it is dipped into the sea." "يا عِبادي، إنَّما هي أعمالُكُم أُحصيها لَكُم، ثُمَّ أوفِّيكُم إيَّاها، فمَن وجَدَ خَيرًا فليَحمَدِ اللَّهَ، ومَن وجَدَ غيرَ ذلك فلا يَلومَنَّ إلَّا نَفسَه..." "O My servants, it is only your deeds that I reckon for you, and then I will pay you in full for them. So whoever finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself." Then the variant: "وفي روايةٍ: إنِّي حَرَّمتُ على نَفسي الظُّلمَ وعلى عِبادي، فلا تَظالَموا." "In another narration: 'I have made injustice forbidden for Myself and for My servants, so do not wrong one another.'" The user also included the narrator and source: Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Muslim, Sahih Muslim, page 2577. And the summary: sahih. And a note: "من أفراد مسلم على البخاري" meaning it is exclusive to Muslim (not in Bukhari).

According to Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin, the belief that Allah is above the Throne ('Arsh) is part of the Islamic creed established by the Qur'an and the Sunnah. He explained that a Muslim must affirm what Allah has affirmed for Himself without denying it, distorting its meaning, likening it to creation, or asking how it is. One of the evidences he frequently cited is the statement of Allah: > الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَى “The Most Merciful rose over the Throne.” — Qur'an, Surah Taha, verse 5 Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen explained that: Allah truly rose over the Throne (istawa 'ala al-'Arsh). In the Arabic language, istiwa conveys the meanings of being high above, ascending, and being established over something, in a manner befitting Allah's Majesty. The exact nature and manner of this istiwa are unknown to human beings. Allah is not in need of the Throne; rather, the Throne and all creation are in need of Allah. He also frequently quoted the principle of the early scholars (Salaf): > “The meaning of istiwa is known, its manner is unknown, believing in it is obligatory, and asking how it is constitutes an innovation.” According to him, Allah is above all of His creation and distinct from it, while at the same time He knows everything, hears everything, and sees everything. Allah's being above the Throne does not mean that He resembles created beings that are above other things, because Allah says: > لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ “There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” — Qur'an, Surah Ash-Shura, verse 11 Therefore, Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen emphasized that affirming Allah's being above the Throne is not tajsim (attributing a physical body to Allah), as long as one does not believe that Allah resembles His creation or attempt to imagine His form or reality. He distinguished between affirming what is stated in the revealed texts and likening Allah to His creation, considering them to be two entirely different matters.

WARNING AGAINST SITTING WITH THE PEOPLE OF INNOVATIONS Imām al-Barbahārī رحمه الله said:
Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd saw his son coming out from the house of a follower of desires and said to him: “O my son! Where are you coming from?” He said: “From ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd.” Thereupon he said: “O my son, that I see you come out of the house of a shameless person is dearer to me than to see you come out from the house of so-and-so. O my son! For you to meet Allāh as a fornicator, sinner, thief, defiantly disobedient, and treacherous person is dearer to me than that you meet Allāh with the sayings of the people of desires.” Do you not see that Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd knew that the shameless person cannot misguide his son from his religion, whereas a follower of innovation can mislead him until he causes him to fall into disbelief?
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān حفظه الله explains: His saying: “Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd saw his son coming out from the house of a follower of desires and said: ‘O my son! Where are you coming from?’ He said: ‘From ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd.’ Thereupon he said: ‘O my son, that I see you come out of the house of a shameless person is dearer to me than to see you come out from the house of so-and-so.’” Meaning: coming out from a sinful follower of the Sunnah is less harmful than sitting with an innovator. This was the warning Yūnus gave his son because he had been sitting with ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd, one of the leaders of the Muʿtazilah. A Muslim who is upon the Sunnah, even if he has shortcomings in his religion, is less harmful than an innovator. Learning from an innovator is even more dangerous. One should not take knowledge from the people of desires and innovation. Rather, knowledge should be taken from the people of the Sunnah, the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah and sound ʿaqīdah, as stated by Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn رحمه الله:
“Indeed, this knowledge is religion, so look carefully from whom you take your religion.”
If merely sitting with an innovator contains this danger, then how about learning from them? His saying: “For you to meet Allāh as a fornicator, sinner, thief, defiantly disobedient, and treacherous person is dearer to me than that you meet Allāh with the saying of the people of desires.” Meaning: it is better for a person to die upon major sins—so long as he has not committed shirk—than to die upon innovation. This is because the major sinner remains under the will of Allāh; He may forgive him, as Allāh says:
“Indeed Allāh does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.” — Qurʾān 4:48
Even if the sinner is punished, his final destination for the people of tawḥīd is Paradise. As for the innovator, his innovation may lead him to kufr, and thus to eternal punishment, because he has introduced into the religion what is not from it. The sinner, by contrast, does not claim his sin is religion. Therefore, dying upon a major sin is less dangerous than dying upon innovation. His saying: “Do you not see that Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd knew that the shameless person cannot mislead his son from his religion, whereas a follower of innovation can mislead him until he causes him to commit disbelief?” This is the reason for avoiding the people of innovation. As for a sinful person upon the Sunnah, even if he is deficient in practice and īmān, the harm of sitting with him is far less than sitting with an innovator—because the innovator actively calls to deviation from the Qurʾān and Sunnah. As for the sinner, he neither warns against the Sunnah nor calls you away from it. At worst, he may only beautify sin, but he does not corrupt creed. The innovator, however, corrupts both action and belief.
