Christianity as a Marriage 2/2: Start with Part 1. The early Church Fathers understood salvation through this same marital framework. St. Augustine wrote:

“He came to the marriage bed of the cross, and there in ascending it consummated His marriage”

- Exposition on Psalm 45 St. John Chrysostom similarly taught:

“As a bridegroom Christ left His Father and came down and cleaved unto His wife”

- Homilies on Ephesians interpreting Genesis 2 as a prophecy of Christ’s incarnation. St. Irenaeus, in Against Heresies, described Christ as restoring humanity to union with God through His incarnation and sacrifice, while Origen’s Commentary on the Song of Songs interprets the entire Song as the love between Christ and His bride. Christianity is therefore more than a legal declaration of forgiveness. It is the story of a faithful Husband pursuing His unfaithful bride, bearing the covenant curse by drinking the cup of wrath, and establishing through His death and resurrection a new and everlasting marriage covenant. From Eden to the New Jerusalem, Scripture consistently presents salvation as the restoration of communion between God and His people: a marriage that will never again be broken. Christianity as a Marriage 1/2 From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible presents God’s relationship with His people not merely as that of a ruler to subjects, but as that of a husband to his bride. Christianity is therefore best understood as the renewal and fulfillment of a divine marriage covenant. Israel is portrayed as God’s covenant wife, whose repeated unfaithfulness is described as adultery. Through the death of Christ, the covenant is renewed, allowing God’s people to be reconciled to Him and ultimately united with Him as the Bride of Christ. The biblical story begins with marriage. In Genesis 2:24, God establishes marriage as part of creation itself:

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

This institution was not merely intended for human society. St. Paul later reveals that it always pointed beyond itself. Quoting Genesis in Ephesians 5:31–32, he writes:

“This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the Church.”

Human marriage is therefore a reflection of the greater covenant between God and His people. Throughout the Old Testament, Israel is consistently described as God’s wife. At Mount Sinai, God entered into covenant with Israel, calling them His treasured possession (Exodus 19:5–6). The prophets develop this relationship explicitly in marital language.

“For your Maker is your husband”

- Jeremiah 3:14 Nowhere is this imagery clearer than in the Book of Hosea, where God commands the prophet to marry an adulterous woman as a living picture of Israel’s repeated idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness. Sin is therefore portrayed not simply as lawbreaking, but as spiritual adultery against a faithful husband. This covenant framework helps explain why Christ’s death is necessary. Under the Mosaic Law, a marriage covenant could not simply be discarded while the husband lived (Romans 7:2–3). Paul applies this principle spiritually, teaching that through Christ’s death believers:

“have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another”

- Romans 7:4 The old covenant reaches its fulfillment through the death of Christ, making possible a renewed covenant relationship between God and His people. The imagery of the “cup” deepens this understanding. Throughout the Old Testament, the cup symbolizes God’s covenant judgment and wrath against sin. Jeremiah hears God say,

“Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath

- Jeremiah 25:15 Similar imagery appears in Isaiah 51:17 and Psalm 75:8. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays:

“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me”

- Matthew 26:39 The cup He accepts is the covenant curse deserved by His unfaithful people. The faithful Bridegroom drinks the cup of wrath Himself so that His bride may be forgiven and restored. Jesus openly identifies Himself as the Bridegroom. When questioned about fasting, He asks:

“Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?”

- Matthew 9:15 John the Baptist likewise rejoices because:

“the bride belongs to the bridegroom”

- John 3:29 These statements intentionally echo the Old Testament, where Yahweh Himself is Israel’s husband. In Christ, the divine Bridegroom has come to reclaim His people. The New Testament extends this covenant beyond ethnic Israel to all who are united to Christ. Paul exhorts husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her in Ephesians 5. Human marriage is thus designed to mirror Christ’s sacrificial love for His bride. Scripture concludes where it began: with a wedding.

“The marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready”

- Revelation 19:7 And the New Jerusalem descends:

“prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Echos from the Ice Age Aurignacion European culture long predates European civilisation. Tens of thousands of years before cities, kingdoms or writing systems appeared in Europe, Ice Age people, a culture now known as the Aurignacion, were already making symbolic art, carving figures and possibly recording information through repeated signs and markings. A recent study argued that some of these engravings may represent an early form of structured notation rather than random decoration. The paper looked at thousands of carved symbols found on Ice Age artefacts across Europe, including famous finds from the caves of southern Germany like the Lion Man from the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave and objects from Vogelherd Cave. Researchers noticed that dots, lines and other symbols appeared in repeated sequences and patterns, almost like a very primitive information system. Using computational analysis, they found the markings were often too organised to just be meaningless scratches or art. The researchers are not claiming these people had full writing like the Sumerians later did, but they argue the engravings may have been a kind of proto-writing or symbolic record keeping. In other words, Upper Palaeolithic Europeans may have been storing or communicating information thousands of years earlier than traditionally believed. The study pushes back the origins of organised symbolic culture far deeper into prehistory and suggests the roots of writing may have started gradually through systems like these. Physical Descriptions of Israel 3rd Century Jesus Recently, a 3rd-century Christian fresco was discovered in an ancient burial chamber near Iznik, Turkey, the site of the old city of Nicaea. It shows Jesus as the “Good Shepherd,” surrounded by sheep, which was one of the earliest and most common symbolic depictions of Christ before the later Byzantine icon style developed. Archaeologists have described it as one of the best-preserved early images of Jesus ever found because much of the original colour and detail survived underground for centuries. The discovery gives us a rare look into how early Christians visually represented Jesus before Christianity became the dominant religion of the Roman Empire. It depicts him with clear Caucasoid features. It’s also worth noting that the pigment has likely faded over time and would’ve been lighter at the time it was created.
