እኔን Earlier, we saw how the English "I am so sorry" centers the speaker's feelings. What makes እኔን so fascinating is that it uses the word "Me," yet it is entirely devoid of ego. It is the complete surrender of the self for the sake of the unfortunate.

The word አይዞህ/ሽ has no exact equivalent in any other language. If you pause to think about it, the word itself has no literal meaning; we have simply habituated it as a comforting wish for the troubled. Yet, it is distinctly different from saying በርታ/ቺ (be strong) or ያልፋል (it will pass). Those phrases suggest a solution or require the suffering person to take action: to take heart or look to the future. አይዞህ/ሽ demands nothing. You are not telling someone in pain to do anything at all. It is a word used only to articulate a profound sense of empathy without offering solutions and centering the speaker. The English phrase, "I am so sorry," comes close, but it inherently centers the speaker's feelings rather than the person suffering. አይዞህ/ሽ, however, powerfully centers the afflicted. It is a mystical yet meaningless word that only finds its profound meaning through communal use.
