Let us analyse this scene in greater detail before we move on. John Safran has invited Jacob Hersant for a paid interview. Hersant obliged because he needed money and wanted attention. Rather than trying to convey a polished image for NSN’s benefit, Hersant brags about being on welfare, which, in his mind, makes him a “guerrilla warrior” like his idol James Mason (a now-unemployed security guard). Rather than demonstrating and projecting Aryan excellence, Hersant—as one of Australia’s leading National Socialists—reinforces the baneful neo-Nazi stereotype: he is unemployed and without wealth or achievements beyond becoming a minor, infamous political figure. Perhaps he is on welfare because he lacks skills and no one wants to employ him, rather than because he wants to be. Sitting across from Hersant is a man he deems to be his inferior: a highly accomplished and talented media figure whose career has stood the test of time. He is much more successful than Hersant and is thus of much higher status. He also comes across as more mature and rational than Hersant. (I am no fan of Safran, but this clearly is the case.) Is this contrast really what Hersant planned? He probably didn’t think that far ahead. Does it make NSN look better? Not at all, obviously. Now Hersant has to explain why he took money from a Jew to make both himself and his organisation look bad on television. Was the $500 worth it?
