LA’s “mansion tax,” sold to Angelenos as a way to tax the rich and boost housing, has instead blocked the building of 9,100 homes, wiped out 16,650 full-time construction jobs and cost $452 million in revenue. A damning new report says the tax, officially known as United to House LA, or ULA — has had a negative impact on the city’s high-end and multi-family real estate markets and collected less than half what it was expected to generate to tackle the city’s housing crisis. France is in turmoil: school protests across the country have turned into mass riots. It all started at a high school in Créteil, near Paris, and then spread across the country. The protests have affected more than 1K high schools—a quarter of all high schools. Students are demanding more teachers, funding, and decent conditions. The situation on the streets is completely out of control: — In Marseille, a woman’s face was burned with aerosol spray ignited by a lighter; — In La Ciotat, a teacher was beaten and doused with gasoline; Teenagers are ransacking high schools, setting cars and buildings on fire, throwing rocks at law enforcement, and attacking teachers. Sixty-five school employees have been injured, including 40 principals. According to various sources, the number of people detained currently ranges from 600 to 2K and about 400 high schools have been closed. Following France, protests have also begun in Belgium.
