However in psychology this is a recognized phenomenon tied to how the brain tries to process, regulate and regain control over traumatic memories
When a person experiences trauma, their brain's alarm system (the amygdala) can remain hyperactive, triggering intense fear responses to everyday memories or thoughts
Engaging with dark media introduces small, manageable doses of heavy emotional arousal (fear, disgust, tension) while the person remains physically safe in their living room
Trauma often causes intrusive, disturbing thoughts or feelings of shame, confusion, and fear. Viewing these dark themes played out in fiction provides a mirror for those feelings without requiring the survivor to face their exact personal memory directly
It allows the brain to project painful emotions onto fictional characters or abstract plots, creating a safe distance
