Every time I hit play on a song by someone who’s hurt others, I feel the echo of the person behind it. I used to think the two were separate. I told myself I was just enjoying the art, not endorsing the artist. But the truth is, that separation never really existed. Art isn’t a neutral object we can wash clean of the hands that made it; it’s a reflection of who they were when they made it—their power, biases, wounds, and choices, even in the most subconscious details. We keep pretending there’s a line between art and artist because it’s convenient. It lets us enjoy what we love without confronting what it says about the world or, more specifically, what it says about us. But pretending doesn’t make the connection disappear; it only makes us complicit in ignoring it. Artists aren’t invisible. Their faces, scandals, interviews, and personas become part of how we experience their work. The artist’s life becomes part of the art’s meaning whether we like it or not. That’s why when we learn that an artist has harmed others, their music can become tainted not just morally, but aesthetically. The knowledge alters how the song feels. Once moral illegitimacy is revealed, our experience of art can be forever changed. We experience tension when our admiration for art conflicts with our disgust toward the artist. To resolve that discomfort, we often tell ourselves we’re “just appreciating the art.” But that denial comes at a cost: a loss of meaning in pleasure. - Tinashe Kupakuwana

Art was a window to the soul of the artist, and it could enrich others only when the soul of the artist contained noble and enduring qualities. - Howard Pyle

The art can’t be separated from the artist.
