Joe Studwel appeared on the odd lots podcast. Ethiopia was mentioned multiple times. Interesting tidbit,
Ethiopia's GDP per capita grew an average of ~5% consecutively for the past 25 years. No other African country matches this stat
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I am chasing an obscure bug that is causing Android's system server to crash. Burnt lots of tokens already. Anyone dealt with such issue before?
Call me skeptical but I always view this kinda announcements with suspicion. Anthropic was literally born because Dario didn't think OpenAI had enough on safety.
That's all gone now. No lab would risk "pausing" or slowing down and missing once in a generation opportunity. At all costs!
Obviously there are many engineers that take safety seriously but business interests triumph

Imitation has a ceiling
imo the perfect example of why corporate imitation has a ceiling is when Tesla launched ፈስ "Emissions Testing Mode" (the fart feature) and the Boombox custom horn options, it proved that they weren't just building cars; they were playing a completely different game rooted in internet culture, software flexibility, and absolute irreverence.
in other legacy Auto companies the Boardroom Kills "Unfuckwithable" Ideas for Fear of Embarrassment.
Traditional boardrooms demand a clear financial return on every single engineering hour. You cannot easily justify the "Return on Investment" of a digital fart machine to a group of strict financial stakeholders.
like Robi isn't beholden to some investor interest, so escaped The ROI Trap pushing meme sound to prod. 👏
Play Doesn't Need Permission
and you cannot out-compete or imitate someone who is willing to be completely absurd while you are trapped trying to look serious.
tesla folks realized a vehicle is just a rolling computer with an external speaker. While competitors were busy benchmarking leather stitching and door-slam sounds, Tesla engineers were writing code for digital pranks. It cost them almost nothing to deploy over-the-air, but it generated millions of dollars in free viral marketing.
Build a category of one.

I went to Entoto today. 3000m above sea level
Fun fact - Each breath deliveres ~10% less oxygen as compared to Addis Ababa at 2300m 😊
This was an interesting listen about the private market of Dinosaurs. It raises the question of why something is valuable. Most people consider old/extinct things valuable. Dinosaur fossils can be worth up to 150 million dollars a pop.
It also makes me wonder if any pre-AI artifact might be worth much more, given most of the content (including creative art ;( )will be AI-generated. Image, text, audio, video, you name it.
