| 3 | A smart speaker looks harmless sitting on a table, but from a security perspective, it is basically a small Linux-style computer with microphones, storage, wireless radios, cloud access and permission to interact with other devices inside the home.
The first thing to understand is the microphone array. Most smart speakers use several microphones so they can pick up a wake word from different directions. The device is constantly analysing audio locally for that trigger, but that does not mean every conversation in the room is automatically being streamed to the cloud. Once the wake word is detected, the following audio can be processed and sent to the provider’s servers for speech recognition and command processing.
Inside the speaker, the main processor or SoC runs the firmware and handles audio processing, networking and device logic. RAM holds temporary data while the speaker is operating, while flash storage contains firmware, configuration files and other persistent information.
Then you have the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware.
This is what makes the speaker part of the wider IoT ecosystem. The speaker can talk to your router, mobile app, cloud services and, depending on how the home is configured, lights, thermostats, TVs, cameras, smart plugs and even smart locks.
That is where the attack surface starts getting interesting.
An attacker does not necessarily need to physically compromise the speaker. The weak point could be the account controlling it, an outdated firmware version, a badly secured router, an exposed cloud API or a third-party smart-home integration with more permissions than it really needs.
If the account behind the speaker is compromised, the attacker may gain access to device settings, connected services, activity information or smart-home controls depending on the platform. If the home network itself is poorly secured, the speaker also becomes another device sitting inside the same environment as laptops, phones, cameras and other systems.
From a forensic perspective, smart speakers are interesting for another reason: they generate artifacts.
Depending on the manufacturer and configuration, investigators may be interested in account activity, device registrations, timestamps, voice-assistant requests, smart-home actions, network activity and cloud records. One artifact alone may mean very little, but when you correlate it with router logs, smart-lock events, phone data or camera footage, it can become part of a much bigger timeline.
That is why I do not really see smart speakers as “just speakers.”
They are microphones, computers, network clients, cloud-connected services and smart-home controllers all sitting in one device.
And that is the real lesson with IoT security: protect the entire ecosystem, not just the hardware on the table. Strong account passwords, MFA where available, updated firmware, secure Wi-Fi, limited third-party integrations and proper network segmentation can make a very big difference. | 227 |

Peter Stokes, an alleged member of Scattered Spider (the group behind $100M+ in ransomware extortion), was arrested at Helsinki Airport this April. Court documents revealed a key piece of evidence: Microsoft's GDID.
What is a GDID?
GDID = Global Device Identifier. It's a unique code baked into every Windows installation. Microsoft uses it for telemetry, crash reports, feature usage, and license verification (it's why swapping your CPU can break your Windows activation).
What Microsoft gave the FBI:
→ Web activity with timestamps
→ Gaming history
→ IP addresses used over time
→ Tool usage (including Ngrok, a tunneling app)
→ Azure account activity
All tied to one persistent device fingerprint. Even though the VPN masked his IP, it didn't affect the GDID.
How they connected the dots:
Every time Stokes logged in to Snapchat, Apple, or Facebook from a new IP address, the GDID was there too. Investigators matched timestamps across platforms and countries: Tallinn, New York, Thailand, Germany. Different IPs. Same machine. Same person.
Microsoft had already identified him in October 2024 and filed a criminal referral. He was still 17. So they waited till He turned 18. Then they moved.
Yes, Stokes is accused of serious crimes. But the GDID data exists on every Windows machine, including yours. The infrastructure that handed his entire digital life to the FBI is the same infrastructure running on your laptop right now.
The unanswered questions:
- There's no public policy on when Microsoft shares GDID data
- No known opt-out mechanism
- No transparency report specifically covering GDID disclosures
- What other criminal referrals has Microsoft quietly filed?
So what did we learn from this ? Use Linux.
