JOB SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technologist – Blood Bank is responsible for ensuring safe, timely, and quality blood transfusion services. The role includes blood collection, screening, processing, storage, and compatibility testing in line with national standards and World Health Organization guidelines
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Blood Collection and Donor Management
• Screen and select eligible blood donors according to national guidelines.
• Perform safe blood collection procedures (whole blood and components).
• Provide pre- and post-donation counseling to donors.
• Ensure proper donor documentation and confidentiality.
2. Blood Screening and Processing
• Conduct mandatory screening tests for transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs) such as HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis.
• Perform blood grouping (ABO and Rh typing).
• Prepare blood components where applicable (PRBC, plasma, platelets).
• Ensure proper labeling and traceability of all blood units.
3. Compatibility Testing and Transfusion Support
• Perform cross-matching and compatibility testing.
• Issue safe and compatible blood for transfusion.
• Support clinicians in transfusion reactions investigation.
• Maintain transfusion records and documentation.
4. Storage and Inventory Management
• Ensure proper storage conditions (temperature monitoring and cold chain management).
• Monitor stock levels and prevent stock-outs or wastage.
• Maintain inventory of reagents, consumables, and equipment.
• Ensure proper disposal of expired or unsafe blood units.
5. Quality Assurance and Safety
• Implement quality control procedures for all tests and equipment.
• Ensure adherence to biosafety and infection prevention protocols.
• Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
• Report incidents, errors, and non-conformities promptly.
6. Equipment Management
• Operate and maintain laboratory and blood bank equipment.
• Ensure calibration and preventive maintenance schedules are followed.
• Report equipment breakdowns and coordinate repairs.
7. Data Management and Reporting
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and registers.
• Compile and submit regular reports (daily, weekly, monthly).
• Ensure proper data entry into HMIS or laboratory information systems.
8. Coordination and Capacity Building
• Collaborate with clinical teams, health facilities, and blood donors.
• Support training and mentorship of government laboratory staff.
• Participate in review meetings and audits.

About You
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Strong knowledge of blood transfusion services and laboratory techniques
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Ability to work under pressure in emergency settings
Good communication and teamwork skills
Strong documentation and reporting skills
Experience in humanitarian or emergency settings
Training in blood safety, transfusion medicine, or quality management systems
Familiarity with national blood bank guidelines and standards
QUALIFICATIONS: (Training/education/experience/physical demands required)
BSc Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field.
Valid professional license to practice in Ethiopia.
Minimum 2–3 years of experience in blood bank/transfusion services.
