Update on Joel’s situation: The Judicial Registrar for the Supreme Court of NSW has suggested April 15th as the next available date for a bail hearing. But Joel’s defence lawyer has expressed concern that his client’s pre-trial detention is already excessive. Out of 2200 cases where someone was charged with the offence Joel has been accused of only 6.5% resulted in jail time, making it highly unlikely Joel would’ve been sent to jail even if convicted. Joel’s lawyer is in communication with the court and citing these stats, seeking an earlier date for the bail hearing. But apparently there’s so much ‘youth-crime’ clogging up the system, April 15th may be the earliest possible date for Joel’s chance at being freed.
