This has to be one of my best finds in Ecuador’s cloud forests—right in Mindo. Spotting this creature was pure luck. It’s a katydid from the genus Panacanthus, a nocturnal, cone-headed species masters of camouflage. Perched on moss and lichen, they vanish into the scenery, nearly impossible to spot.
This one’s a subadult female. You can tell by her large ovipositor—the prominent "stinger" that looks fierce but is only used for laying eggs. Despite her thorny appearance, she’s an impressive hunter. These katydids are predators, feeding on everything from moths to small frogs—though they’ll occasionally snack on fruit too.
Absolutely mesmerizing. I carefully returned her to the exact spot where I found her and offered a freshly caught moth as a thank-you. She gobbled it up with enthusiasm. Haven’t seen her since.

True mastery in form, flawless symmetry, and the quiet power of the wild. Witness the Superb Bird-of-Paradise unfold its obsidian wings into a living silhouette, revealing a radiant, cobalt-blue shield with near-surgical precision. Against a backdrop of deep, velvety darkness, this moment captures nature’s elegance in isolation—untouched, unscripted, unfolding in 2026’s most remote corners.
This isn’t performance—this is evolutionary artistry at its peak. A fleeting ritual of light, movement, and instinct that transcends ordinary observation. 🪶✨
Tranquility. Adaptation. Survival.
Nature’s true armor revealed. 🦅🛡

| 6 | Marine iguanas have a remarkable adaptation that lets them thrive in their oceanic habitat: specialized salt glands that efficiently expel excess salt through sneezing. Feeding underwater means they swallow large amounts of seawater, putting them at risk of dehydration. To counter this, their bodies use these glands to filter salt from the bloodstream while preserving vital water—keeping them hydrated and healthy. This incredible evolutionary feature is key to their survival in the harsh marine environment of the Galapagos. 📍Santa Cruz, Galapagos, Ecuador 🇪🇨

He followed behind.
And clutching his tail—
a ten-week-old lion cub,
convinced this was the only way to ride.
Others trailed beside them, single file,
chuffing softly, matching pace.
A pride on the move.
All of them.
Together. 🦁

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, honors the deep, interconnected bond between life and death. ✨ Traditions include building altars adorned with photos, flowers, candles, and cherished foods of those who’ve passed. ❤️ In Taxco, Mexico, the town glows with candlelight and vibrant marigolds lining the streets, guiding the spirits on their journey home. 🕯️

| 13 | Known for their habit of relentlessly drilling into trees, woodpeckers are highly territorial when it comes to their chosen trunks. They bore holes for various reasons—hunting for food, attracting a mate, or creating a nest. Using their sharp, chisel-like beak and a uniquely reinforced skull, they hammer through wood with remarkable ease. 🐦
