Tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have escalated, bringing the two nations to the brink of war. Tigray officials warn that an armed conflict is imminent, pointing to internal power struggles as a key factor. Both countries have begun military mobilization, with Eritrea ordering a nationwide call-up of its forces and Ethiopia deploying troops toward the Eritrean border, heightening fears of a direct confrontation.

A Chinese research team has developed FlightVGM, an AI model that uses a standard industrial chip instead of Nvidia’s high-end GPUs, delivering 30% better performance than the RTX 3090 and 4.5 times greater energy efficiency than Nvidia’s flagship GPUs. This breakthrough challenges Nvidia’s dominance in AI computing by providing a more cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative.

Ukraine has developed a drone carrier capable of transporting up to six FPV drones, designed to strike targets behind enemy lines. In addition to carrying the drones, the carrier also functions as a communication repeater, ensuring a stable connection between the operator and the FPV drones.

Dominic Abelen, a New Zealand soldier killed in August 2022 while fighting in eastern Ukraine, is finally being brought home after nearly three years. On leave without pay from the Defence Force, he died during a mission to seize a Russian trench line in the Vuhledar region, and his body fell into Russian hands after his team came under heavy fire. A planned handover in October 2022 returned the body of American soldier Joshua Jones, who died alongside Abelen, but his own remains were left in a mortuary in Russian-occupied Donetsk for reasons still unclear. After 2.5 years of efforts by multiple agencies, his body was finally returned to Ukraine, where fellow soldiers performed a haka before his coffin, draped in New Zealand and Ukrainian flags, was prepared for repatriation from Kyiv. Known by the callsign 'Tolkien', Abelen joined Ukraine’s GUR Legion as an instructor before becoming a machine gunner and was posthumously awarded the "Ukraine Above All" and "For Military Merits" medals.

Hundreds of student protesters in Serbia blocked the public television station, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), in Belgrade overnight on Monday, escalating ongoing demonstrations. The protests began after a deadly train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad last November killed 15 people and have evolved into a broader movement against President Aleksandar Vucic's government.
Students accuse RTS of biased reporting in favour of Vucic’s administration. Riot police used batons to disperse the protesters, resulting in at least one officer injury. Despite the blockade, RTS continued broadcasting as some employees entered through a side entrance. Protesters planned to maintain the blockade for at least 22 hours, with a major rally scheduled for the weekend.
The protests have received significant support from Serbian citizens, with tens of thousands attending since November, demanding accountability for the tragedy and addressing alleged government corruption. In a televised interview, Vucic condemned the protesters and warned against the upcoming rally, stating, "You will have to kill me if you want to replace me." He and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) have dismissed the protests as foreign-backed efforts to destabilise Serbia.

So what
These protests have shown no sign of slowing down, despite the length of time they have been going. Though it still seems unlikely that Vucic will resign, it is hard to see how this situation can end without something changing. It still seems likely that the longer the protests continue, the more government forces will use violence against protesters. Additionally, it is possible that the country could look to hold elections as a way of legitimising Vucic's rule, but that would, of course, risk him being unelected.

Ukraine has expressed its willingness to accept the U.S. proposal for an immediate 30-day temporary ceasefire, extendable by mutual agreement, provided that Russia agrees to and implements it simultaneously. The United States will emphasize to Russia that mutual commitment is crucial for achieving peace. Additionally, the U.S. will promptly lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume military aid to Ukraine, as stated in the joint announcement by the Ukrainian and American delegations following their meeting in Jeddah.
