Why Is The Name Of BARZILLAI Remember?
There are people in the Bible about whom only a few verses are written.
No impressive miracles.
No long speeches.
No chapters dedicated to their lives.
And yet, these very people can sometimes touch your heart more deeply than those about whom we read so much.
Barzillai is one such person.
When David is forced to flee from his own son, Absalom, everything seems lost. The king who was once cheered throughout Israel is now trudging wearily through the wilderness. No palace anymore. No throne. Only a small group of people who have remained loyal.
It is at this moment that Barzillai appears.
He brings beds, food, and everything the king and his men need. The Scripture simply says that they were hungry, tired, and thirsty.
He does what he can for the king, without knowing that his loyalty would preserve his name.
He only sees what the rejected king needs.
That moved me.
Because it is easy to stay close to a king as long as he is on the throne.
But Barzillai chooses David, when he is rejected.
Later, when David returns to Jerusalem, he invites Barzillai to come with him and live with him in Jerusalem. The king wants to reward him for what he has done.
But then the old man responds in a way that makes me think.
He does not desire the palace.
Not honor.
Not a place at the king's table.
He asks if that blessing might go to Kimham.
As if to say:
"It was never about the reward for me. I only wanted to serve the king."
Perhaps that is the most beautiful thing that can be said about a person.
That he does not follow Christ for what he receives…
but because he loves Him.
I hope that when my life is over, it will not be my achievements that are most important.
But that the Lord will say to me that I remained faithful to Him.
Because ultimately, that is the greatest reward.
Not living in the palace.
But being known by the King.
That is why Barzillai's name is remembered.
Not because he wanted to be great.
But because he loved the king when others turned away from him.
And that is what remains.
Love for the King writes names in a Book that never fades.
"However, do not rejoice in this, that the angels rejoice over one sinner who repents."
Luke 10:20

| 2 |  WAAROM WORDT DE NAAM VAN BARZILLAI BEWAARD?
Er zijn mensen in de Bijbel van wie slechts enkele verzen zijn opgeschreven.
Geen indrukwekkende wonderen.
Geen lange toespraken.
Geen hoofdstukken die aan hun leven zijn gewijd.
En toch kunnen juist deze mensen je hart soms dieper raken dan degenen over wie we zoveel meer lezen.
Barzillai is zo iemand.
Wanneer David moet vluchten voor zijn eigen zoon Absalom, lijkt alles verloren. De koning die ooit door heel Israël werd toegejuicht, trekt nu vermoeid door de woestijn. Geen paleis meer. Geen troon. Alleen een kleine groep mensen die trouw gebleven zijn.
Juist op dat moment verschijnt Barzillai.
Hij brengt bedden, voedsel en alles wat de koning en zijn mannen nodig hebben. De Schrift zegt eenvoudig dat zij hongerig, vermoeid en dorstig waren.
Hij doet wat hij kan voor de koning, zonder te weten dat zijn trouw zijn naam zou bewaren.
Hij ziet alleen wat de verworpen koning nodig heeft.
Dat ontroerde me.
Want het is gemakkelijk om dicht bij een koning te blijven zolang hij op de troon zit.
Maar Barzillai kiest voor David, wanneer hij verworpen is.
Later, wanneer David weer in Jeruzalem terugkeert, nodigt hij Barzillai uit om met hem mee te gaan en bij hem in Jeruzalem te wonen. De koning wil hem belonen voor wat hij heeft gedaan.
Maar dan antwoordt de oude man op een manier die mij stil maakt.
Hij verlangt niet naar het paleis.
Niet naar eer.
Niet naar een plaats aan de tafel van de koning.
Hij vraagt of die zegen naar Kimham mag gaan.
Alsof hij wil zeggen:
“Het was mij nooit om de beloning te doen. Ik wilde alleen de koning dienen.”
Misschien is dat wel het mooiste wat van een mens gezegd kan worden.
Dat hij Christus niet volgt om wat hij ontvangt…
maar omdat hij Hem liefheeft.
Ik hoop dat, wanneer mijn leven eenmaal voorbij is, niet mijn prestaties het belangrijkste zullen zijn.
Maar dat de Heere tegen mij zal zeggen dat ik Hem trouw ben gebleven.
Want uiteindelijk is dát de grootste beloning.
Niet leven in het paleis.
Maar gekend worden door de Koning.
Daarom werd de naam van Barzillai bewaard.
Niet omdat hij groot wilde zijn.
Maar omdat hij de koning liefhad toen anderen zich van hem afkeerden.
En dat is wat blijft.
Liefde voor de Koning schrijft namen in een Boek dat nooit vergaat.
“Verblijd u echter hierin dat uw namen opgeschreven zijn in de hemelen.”

OVERTHINKING — WHEN THE FLESH CRAVES CONTROL
Why does our flesh do this?
Why are our thoughts constantly searching for control? Why do they sometimes jump from one thing to another, while we simultaneously know that Someone has everything under His control?
We know that God reigns.
We know that nothing escapes Him.
We know that tomorrow is not hidden from Him.
And yet, the flesh seeks.
It seeks something tangible. Certainty that we can see, understand, and hold onto. It wants to know how things will unfold, why things happen, and what the next step will be. It's as if it's trying to impose order on things that God has not yet revealed to us.
This creates unease.
Not always a great fear or a clearly identifiable worry. Sometimes it's much more subtle. A restlessness that you can hardly put your finger on. You can't quite say: this is the problem. And yet, it's there.
A thought here.
A possibility there.
A question that has no answer.
A small piece of uncertainty about tomorrow.
These may seem like just minor imperfections in our thoughts, but when we keep searching for human certainty, it can feel like a glass plate that once formed a whole is suddenly lying in front of us in thousands of small pieces.
And then our flesh tries to put each piece back in its place.
How does this work?
What if that happens?
What should I do with this?
What comes next?
Have I missed something?
We pick up piece by piece and try to make the whole visible again.
But perhaps the problem lies right there.
GOD HASN'T ASKED US TO PUT THAT GLASS PLATE BACK TOGETHER OURSELVES.
We are trying to gain an overview of something of which only He knows the complete picture.
Therefore, God's Word says:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding."
— Proverbs 3:5
This is actually the opposite of what our flesh naturally wants to do. Our flesh says: first understand, then rest. God's Word says: <b>TRUST, EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.</b>
Because even our own heart is not a reliable compass:
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?"
— Jeremiah 17:9
That's profound. Because we often think that if we just think, search, and analyze long enough, we will eventually find certainty. But Scripture warns us not to seek our ultimate certainty in ourselves.
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but at the end of it are the ways of death."
— Proverbs 14:12
And:
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord.
— Isaiah 55:8
WE SEE PIECES. GOD SEES THE WHOLE.
We see today and try to figure out tomorrow. God sees the beginning and the end at the same time.
Therefore, Christ does not call us to try to control tomorrow in our thoughts:
"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
— Matthew 6:34
And Paul writes:
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."
— Philippians 4:6
That's the key.
Not in thinking even harder.
Not in going through every possible scenario.
Not in obtaining complete control.
But in recognizing what our flesh is doing.
Sometimes we have to learn to say, as if in the midst of that tangle of thoughts:
MY FLESH IS SEEKING CERTAINTY IN WHAT IT CAN SEE, UNDERSTAND, AND CONTROL, WHILE GOD IS TEACHING ME TO FIND CERTAINTY IN HIM AND IN HIS WORD.
This doesn't mean that thinking is wrong. It also doesn't mean that planning is wrong. God has given us our minds, and we are responsible for the things He puts in our hands.
But there is a boundary between responsible thinking and trying to control what only God controls.
And it is often at that boundary that that difficult-to-describe unease arises.
Our flesh tries to grasp tomorrow today.
But tomorrow is not in our hands.
TOMORROW IS IN GOD'S HANDS.
Therefore, Peter says:
"Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you."
— 1 Peter 5:7
Pay attention to what is said there: not that we must first fully understand our anxiety. Not that we must solve every piece before we can go to God.
We may cast it upon Him.
Perhaps that is why that unease is sometimes so difficult to grasp. We are looking for one big cause, while it sometimes consists of a hundred small thoughts. A hundred small attempts by the flesh to gain control over something it cannot control.
The solution is not necessarily to solve all a hundred thoughts one by one.
The solution is to see again <b>WHO HOLDS THE WHOLE PICTURE.</b>
When that glass plate seems to lie in front of our eyes in thousands of pieces, God still sees the complete picture.
No piece is lost to Him.
No event surprises Him.
No tomorrow is uncertain to Him.
No path needs to be fully understood by us before He can lead us.
"A man's heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps."
— Proverbs 16:9
That puts the flesh to rest.
Not because we suddenly understand everything, but because we realize again that we don't have to.
Our flesh craves control.
FAITH TEACHES US TO TRUST.
Our flesh wants to see first and then rest.
FAITH CAN REST BEFORE IT SEES.
Our flesh tries to put the thousands of pieces back together itself.
BUT GOD'S WORD TURNS OUR EYES AWAY FROM THE PIECES AND BACK TO HIM WHO ALWAYS HAS SEEN THE COMPLETE PICTURE.
And perhaps that is the key to that elusive unease:
Not to try to control it completely, but to recognize where it comes from and to bring it back under the Word of God again and again.
Because our rest ultimately does not lie in the fact that we know how everything will go.
Our rest lies in knowing <b>WHO HAS EVERYTHING IN HIS HAND.</b>
"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is fixed on you, and he trusts in you."
— Isaiah 26:3

Waarom doet ons vlees dit toch?
Waarom zijn onze gedachten voortdurend zoekende naar grip? Waarom springen ze soms van het ene naar het andere, terwijl wij tegelijkertijd heel goed weten Wie alles in Zijn hand heeft?
We weten dat God regeert.
We weten dat niets Hem ontgaat.
We weten dat morgen voor Hem niet verborgen is.
En toch zoekt het vlees.
Het zoekt naar iets tastbaars. Naar zekerheid die wij kunnen zien, begrijpen en vasthouden. Het wil weten hoe iets zal verlopen, waarom iets gebeurt en wat de volgende stap zal zijn. Het probeert als het ware alvast orde te scheppen in dingen die God nog niet aan ons heeft geopenbaard.
Daar ontstaat onrust.
Niet altijd een grote angst of een duidelijk aanwijsbare zorg. Soms is het veel subtieler. Een onrust waarop je nauwelijks je vinger kunt leggen. Je kunt niet precies zeggen: dít is het probleem. En toch is het er.
Een gedachte hier.
Een mogelijkheid daar.
Een vraag waarop nog geen antwoord bestaat.
Een klein stukje onzekerheid over morgen.
Het lijken misschien slechts kleine oneffenheden in onze gedachten, maar wanneer we erop blijven zoeken naar menselijke zekerheid, kan het voelen alsof een glazen plaat die eerst één geheel vormde ineens in duizenden kleine stukjes voor ons ligt.
En dan probeert ons vlees ieder stukje weer op zijn plaats te leggen.
Hoe zit dit?
Wat als dat gebeurt?
Wat moet ik hiermee?
Wat komt hierna?
Heb ik iets over het hoofd gezien?
We rapen stukje voor stukje op en proberen zelf het geheel weer zichtbaar te krijgen.
Maar misschien ligt juist dáár het probleem.
𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗴𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗮𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗸𝗮𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗲 𝘇𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻.
Wij proberen overzicht te verkrijgen over iets waarvan alleen Hij het volledige beeld kent.
Daarom zegt Gods Woord:
„Vertrouw op den HEERE met uw ganse hart, en steun op uw verstand niet.”
— Spreuken 3:5
Dat is eigenlijk precies tegenovergesteld aan wat ons vlees van nature wil doen. Ons vlees zegt: eerst begrijpen, dan rust. Gods Woord zegt: 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘄, 𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗷𝗽𝘁.
Want ook ons eigen hart is geen betrouwbaar kompas:
„Arglistig is het hart, meer dan enig ding, ja, dodelijk is het; wie zal het kennen?”
— Jeremia 17:9
Dat gaat diep. Want wij denken vaak dat wanneer we maar lang genoeg nadenken, zoeken en analyseren, we uiteindelijk zekerheid zullen vinden. Maar de Schrift waarschuwt ons juist om onze uiteindelijke zekerheid niet in onszelf te zoeken.
„Er is een weg, die iemand recht schijnt; maar het laatste van dien zijn wegen des doods.”
— Spreuken 14:12
En:
„Want Mijn gedachten zijn niet ulieder gedachten, en uw wegen zijn niet Mijn wegen, spreekt de HEERE.”
— Jesaja 55:8
𝗪𝗶𝗷 𝘇𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗸𝗸𝗲𝗻. 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝘇𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹.
Wij zien vandaag en proberen morgen erbij te bedenken. God ziet begin en einde tegelijk.
Daarom roept Christus ons ook niet op om morgen alvast in onze gedachten onder controle te krijgen:
„Zijt dan niet bezorgd tegen den morgen; want de morgen zal voor het zijne zorgen.”
— Mattheüs 6:34
En Paulus schrijft:
„Weest in geen ding bezorgd; maar laat uw begeerten in alles, door bidden en smeken, met dankzegging bekend worden bij God.”
— Filippenzen 4:6
Daar ligt de sleutel.
Niet in nóg harder nadenken.
Niet in ieder mogelijk scenario doorlopen.
Niet in het verkrijgen van volledige controle.
Maar in het herkennen van wat ons vlees aan het doen is.
Soms moeten we midden in die wirwar van gedachten als het ware leren zeggen:
𝗠𝗶𝗷𝗻 𝘃𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝘇𝗼𝗲𝗸𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗸𝗮𝗻 𝘇𝗶𝗲𝗻, 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗷𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗻, 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗶𝗷𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗷 𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗺 𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗭𝗶𝗷𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱.
Dat betekent niet dat nadenken verkeerd is. Het betekent ook niet dat plannen verkeerd is. God heeft ons verstand gegeven en wij dragen verantwoordelijkheid voor de dingen die Hij in onze handen legt.
Maar er bestaat een grens tussen verantwoordelijk nadenken en innerlijk proberen te beheersen wat alleen God beheerst.
En juist bij die grens ontstaat vaak die moeilijk te omschrijven onrust.
Ons vlees probeert morgen vandaag al vast te pakken.
Maar morgen ligt niet in onze handen.
𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻.
Daarom zegt Petrus:
„Werpt al uw bekommernis op Hem, want Hij zorgt voor u.”
— 1 Petrus 5:7
Let erop wat daar staat: niet dat wij onze bekommernis eerst volledig moeten begrijpen. Niet dat wij ieder stukje moeten oplossen voordat wij tot God mogen gaan.
Wij mogen het op Hem werpen.
Misschien is dat wel waarom die onrust soms zo moeilijk te vatten is. We zoeken naar één grote oorzaak, terwijl het soms uit honderd kleine gedachten bestaat. Honderd kleine pogingen van het vlees om grip te krijgen op iets wat het niet kan beheersen.
De oplossing is dan niet noodzakelijk dat wij alle honderd gedachten één voor één oplossen.
De oplossing is dat wij opnieuw zien 𝗪𝗶𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗴𝘁.
Wanneer die glazen plaat voor onze ogen in duizenden stukjes lijkt te liggen, ziet God nog altijd het volledige beeld.
Geen stukje is Hem kwijtgeraakt.
Geen gebeurtenis verrast Hem.
Geen morgen is voor Hem onzeker.
Geen weg hoeft door ons eerst volledig begrepen te worden voordat Hij hem kan leiden.
„Des mensen hart overdenkt zijn weg; maar de HEERE stiert zijn gang.”
— Spreuken 16:9
Daar wordt het vlees stilgezet.
Niet doordat wij ineens alles begrijpen, maar doordat wij opnieuw beseffen dat wij dat ook niet hoeven.
Ons vlees verlangt naar controle.
𝗛𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘄𝗲𝗻.
Ons vlees wil eerst zien en dan rusten.
𝗛𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗴 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝘇𝗶𝗲𝘁.
Ons vlees probeert de duizenden stukjes zelf weer bij elkaar te leggen.
