⚓️ Destroyer USS Spruance (DD-963): The Ship That Redefined the Modern Destroyer
In the 1970s, the U.S. Navy faced a challenging task: it needed a new destroyer capable of hunting submarines effectively while also being large and versatile enough for long-range ocean operations.
The answer was the new Spruance-class. The lead ship, USS Spruance (DD-963), was named after Admiral Raymond A. Spruance and entered service in 1975.
🧭 From a Specialized Design to a Major Class
The original concept behind USS Spruance was heavily focused on anti-submarine warfare. The ship was designed primarily to protect carrier groups and other naval formations from submarines.
The design proved successful enough to become the basis for a major construction program, with 31 ships ultimately built. It became one of the largest destroyer programs of its era.
The Spruance-class was also considerably larger than many earlier destroyers. Its size provided greater endurance, more room for equipment and fuel, and enough space to support substantial aviation facilities.
🚁 A Stern Built Around Helicopters
One of the most distinctive features of USS Spruance was its large stern section. It housed a spacious hangar and flight deck designed to operate two anti-submarine helicopters.
These helicopters greatly extended the ship's reach. They could search for submarines far beyond the ship itself, deploy sonar buoys, and attack underwater targets.
This created a highly effective combination: the destroyer could detect a submarine using its own sensors, then send a helicopter far ahead to continue the search and engage the target at a greater distance.
🔥 When an Anti-Submarine Ship Became a Missile Platform
As technology and naval strategy evolved, the role of the Spruance-class began to change. Modernization programs transformed some of these specialized destroyers into much more versatile warships.
Several ships received the capability to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles, dramatically expanding their combat potential.
The destroyer was no longer limited to protecting naval formations from submarines. It could also conduct long-range strikes against targets ashore.
A ship originally designed around one specific mission had gradually become a multi-purpose missile platform.
🌊 From the Cold War to Real Combat Operations
Much of USS Spruance's career unfolded during the Cold War, when the U.S. Navy was preparing for a possible large-scale maritime confrontation.
But the ship also took part in real-world operations. Spruance operated in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf, performing escort duties, protecting maritime routes and supporting wider naval operations.
During Operation Desert Storm, Spruance-class destroyers launched Tomahawk cruise missiles against targets ashore. It was a clear demonstration of how dramatically the role of these ships had evolved since their original design.
⚙️ Why the Spruance-Class Mattered
The Spruance-class is not always remembered alongside the most famous American warships of the 20th century. It did not have the legendary reputation of certain battleships or aircraft carriers.
Yet ships like Spruance reveal how naval warfare was changing. The class was created to counter a specific threat, but its design proved adaptable enough to take on entirely new missions.
In many ways, the Spruance-class became a bridge between the specialized destroyers of the Cold War and the multi-role missile destroyers that followed.
📍 Interesting Fact
Despite carrying the DD — Destroyer designation, the Spruance-class was exceptionally large for its time. In terms of size, it approached some ships that other navies classified as frigates or even smaller cruisers.

With the release of version 0.108, a change was made to the behavior of cluster warhead missiles: upgrading the damage of such missiles no longer improves the damage of the additional cluster submunitions.
This affected a number of modules, and our players rightly noticed a drop in actual damage compared to the previous version. Specifically:
• Oreshnik missile (RF Kronshtadt battleship)
• DF-17 X9 missile (CN Type 100 submarine)
• Kh-90 missile
• MGM-140 NTACMS missile
• Sarma MLRS (300 mm) grenade launcher
• And a number of other modules
🛠 We heard your feedback and have already applied a correction that was part of the original plan: the direct damage of all affected modules has been increased so that the total damage per salvo returns to the values from version 0.107.
This means that the Oreshnik, Kh-90, and similar equipment once again deal the same damage as before.

🛠 The league requirement for purchasing new items in the Ranked Store has been disabled until the release of Version 0.109.
At the start of the season, the system was not working correctly: before reaching the required league, players could not see an item’s price and characteristics or access its test drive. This is not how the system is intended to work. This information should be available to all players regardless of their current league — both now and after the restriction returns.
Until Version 0.109 is released, item purchases will not depend on your league. With the release of the new version, the restriction will return together with other Ranked Store improvements, but item prices, characteristics, and test drives will remain available to players in all leagues.
💬 We understand why the new rule raised questions among players who had already reached high leagues and saved up Ranked Points in advance. Previously, having enough currency was sufficient to make a purchase, while now some new items have an additional requirement — reaching the required league in the current season. This does not invalidate your previous achievements or accumulated points, but it does change the familiar purchase conditions.
To better explain the reasons behind the Ranked Store changes, we have also prepared answers to the most frequently asked questions.
1️⃣ Why is a league requirement being added?
— Its purpose is to tie access to some rare items to a player’s performance in the current Ranked Mode season and provide an additional goal for progressing through the leagues. At the same time, the restriction should apply only to purchasing an item, not to viewing its information.
2️⃣ What does the timer on items mean?
— The timer shows how long the current assortment will remain available. It will stay in the store for another six months, after which the assortment will be updated. Items you have already purchased will not disappear from your account, and until the end of their availability period they will remain visible in the store with the “Purchased” status.
— Players should not worry about the introduction of rotation: among other things, it will allow us to regularly add new unique ships and equipment to the Ranked Store — one of the most frequent requests from the community.
3️⃣ What is the purpose of the new Builds section?
— The section features one ready-made build at a time: a ship and several pieces of equipment selected specifically for it. The available builds will be updated over time.
This section is intended to help new and developing players navigate the wide range of available weapons and equipment more easily and see an example of a well-matched setup.

The season will run until September 29 and, as usual, will be divided into periods with bonus classes — choose them to earn more points and progress through the leagues faster.
🏆 New arrivals in the Ranked Shop:
• RF Admiral Kharlamov destroyer (T3, Russia)
• Ka-27 PK helicopter (T3, Russia)
• Paket-NKM autocannon (T3, Russia)
• Unique Volkhov Group “Bastion” skin (available for RF Admiral Kharlamov)
🛠 Additional changes:
• A dedicated build section has been added. It will feature one complete build at a time: a ship and several pieces of equipment selected specifically for it. The available builds will be updated over time.
• Shop items now have availability timers. The current selection will remain available for another six months and will then be updated.
• Some items now have a rank requirement. To make a purchase, you must be at the required rank or higher at the time of purchase. A rank reached earlier will not count if you have since dropped below it.
• Purchased items will no longer disappear from the list: until their availability period ends, they will remain visible with the “Purchased” status.
