I tried it once, back in ‘94. Lay down on the couch, and forty minutes later I was redesigning the couch. The missus still hasn’t forgiven me.

Truth is, my life’s never been easy, and I won’t pretend otherwise. But I’ll tell you something most people work out too late: a lot of that hardship was my choice. Every time the comfortable road showed up, I took the other one. Not because I like suffering (I’m not mad, whatever the wife says) but because the hard road is the only one that actually goes anywhere.
Seneca put it well about two thousand years ago: “Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labour does the body.” Comfort feels like a reward, but early on it’s the most expensive thing you can buy. You pay for it later, with interest.
So here’s the lesson, for whatever an old bloke’s advice is worth. Pick your hard. Life’s going to hand you difficulty either way. You can get dragged through it, or you can choose it, aim it, and make it build something. I chose mine a long time ago, and this project is where it’s all been heading.
So no, I won’t be resting just yet.
I’ll rest when this is finished. When that wave of liquidity rolls in and reaches every single one of you who stuck around. Then I’ll put my feet up, crack a cold one, and call it a job well done.
