I find it weirdly funny how long it took humanity to figure out natural selection. Countless brilliant minds existed before Darwin, yet none of them seem to have put the pieces together. Then, in the mid-19th century, Darwin comes along and suddenly one of the most powerful ideas in biology clicks into place. It's such an obvious idea in hindsight, which somehow makes it even more absurd that it took so long.

In this influential book, Eric Hobsbawm explores how many traditions (from royal ceremonies to national symbols and cultural rituals) were deliberately shaped or reinvented to create a sense of continuity, strengthen national identity, or legitimize political authority.
who creates tradition, when, and for what purpose?
