| 4 | You are currently finishing your 3rd full-length album «Laulut tulen ja jään», where ancient myths, shadowy forests, and inner human conflicts are set to merge. Can you share more about the core concept of this record and how it will differ from «Yön olevainen puoli» and «Riitti»?
Helmouth: Although much of the same themes and elements – lyrically speaking – are still there, this album is something different. It's a beast that took more or less eight years to give birth to. There are layers upon layers thematically as well as soundscape wise. In simple terms, it's a very traditional epic/story of a man who leaves a war-torn land behind and sets out towards the underworld to face death and end all suffering. Underworld being Tuonela and death the Mistress of Tuonela aka Loviatar/Tuonetar/Pohjan akka etc. Along the way he has to face all these adversaries. That's the storyline that runs through the whole album. On song level it gets more complex with a lot of mythological references, hidden meanings and so forth. Thematically speaking, it deals with mental health issues, loss and grief, and existential introspection.
The last festival you attended was the Nummirock Metal Festival with its 40th anniversary, where Black Veil Brides, Satyricon, Grave and others performed. Tell us how your performance went, what new people did you meet, and what impressions did this festival leave behind?
Waara: This was the second time we've played at Nummirock. The previous time was in 2019, and that was an unforgettable experience. But this time, both the festival and the audience completely blew us away. The tent was absolutely packed, and you can still feel the energy of the crowd. Nummirock is one of the best festivals I know, and I can tell you that I've been to many festivals all around the world. There's no better place to celebrate midsummer than Nummirock.
Finland, like Norway and Sweden, is an amazing country for black metal, which has raised such bands as Impaled Nazarene, Archgoat, Behexen and Beherit as sons. What do you think makes the Finnish metal sound so special, and do you feel a sense of brotherhood with other local bands?
Helmouth: I think there are so many factors that influence the way our music sounds. In many ways it comes down to nature – the long and dark winters, the vast forests and thousands of lakes, and majestic fjell and rivers of the north. Every season has its impact, but it's hard to overlook the fact that our winter is basically six months long – and it can be brutal. Culture also plays a part in our sound, but how you choose to implement it differs. In a way music encapsulates our history, our heritage and the beauty of our Nordic land.
The whole band of you is celebrating Kalevala Day, also known as Finnish Culture Day. You also encourage your listeners to delve into the culture of the country. What does the word patriotism mean to you personally and how do you feel about the cultures of other nations?
Helmouth: I would encourage people to delve into cultures of any country. I'm interested in all cultures, mythologies and folklore. Of course, the Nordic mythologies are closer to my heart, because I was born here and I feel connected to the land. I understand where it all comes from. Still, I always strive to understand more and to broaden my horizons.
How do you see Paara in 5 years? What festivals will you be able to perform at, how much new material will you release, and how many major bands will you open for?
Helmouth: I see our music as a constantly evolving entity. I hope to see many manifestations of it in the future and that they'll spread far and wide. | 153 |
| 5 | You have been active since 2011. How has Paara's sound evolved from your early demos to the present day, and how has the band's internal dynamic changed over the years?
Helmouth: The whole band was formed because of our shared passion for 90s black metal, especially the Norwegian BM bands. At the beginning our sound was more raw and in a way the songs were more straightforward. Our sound has found much needed depth and the songs are now layered. You can find something new with every playback when listening to our 3rd album. The internal dynamics haven't changed much. We all play our roles and contribute to the sound, the music and the band.
Paara was originally founded by Helmouth and Zvartus with the vision of combining the grandeur of northern nature, Finnish melancholy, and the raw emotion of black metal. How has this original concept evolved or deepened with the addition of Lempo, Trangoth, and Waara?
Helmouth: Finnish mythology, folklore and nature has been – and probably will always be the main source of our inspiration. The concept evolves with the composing process of each album. It's all very organic and we don't feel any pressure to force it in any direction. I think the biggest change was probably Hahtezan joining the band as a full member of the band. That gave us the chance to take things a step further.
You are signed to Dusktone, sharing the label roster with giants like Finntroll, Dark Funeral, Cryptopsy, and Dark Tranquility. How did you sign a contract with this label and what did this collaboration give you?
Hahtezan: The collaboration with Dusktone came about almost out of nowhere. I was in Italy recording my guest vocals for my italian friend's band, Shores of Null. I think I happened to mention to Davide (singer of Shores of Null) that we're currently working on a new album for Paara, and that once it was finished, we need to seriously look for a label. Davide floated the idea: why not ask the same label that represents their band? He said: «I think your music will be perfect for their taste». We gave it some thought and concluded that a smaller record label – one that truly loved our music and had the time to invest in us – would be the perfect fit for us. So far, the collaboration has gone really smoothly, and we couldn't be happier to be under the wing of Dusktone, working with seasoned music industry professionals.
Your 2018 album «Riitti» was a massive breakthrough, reaching 5th place in the official Finnish album charts and receiving excellent reviews. Did you anticipate this level of commercial success, and how did this achievement impact your approach to songwriting?
Helmouth: When we finished the recording and got the mixing of the album done, we knew that it was good and it was something new. We also realised that we had taken a huge step forward. The album bent and broke some genre borders and therefore it was much more approachable for a lot of people. This wasn't intentional though. Our music dictates our actions and this is the form these songs took. We are very happy with the fanbase that we've been able to form. It means that more people will hear our music. Even though we make music mainly for ourselves, music is also meant to be shared and I hope it will reach even bigger audiences in the future. But any success we might achieve, will not impact our approach to songwriting. We need to stay true to ourselves.
We have a traditional question that has been relevant to our channel since its creation – when in the past it was the tribute page of the Mayhem band. So, what can you say about the members and the music of this band?
Helmouth: Great live band, I've seen them multiple times. «De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas» is an absolute classic. | 120 |

| 10 | "Succubus - Destiny" 1995
Последний на сегодня релиз радует в первую очередь классным саундом. Да, это не Моррисаунд, но для СНГ 1995 года - всё равно очень круто. Ладно, возможно, мне попался хороший ремастер, но вообще изначально плохое сведение никаким ремастером не поправишь. Касательно материала, тут много серьёзных техничных соло, сложные риффы с уклоном в прогрессив, в общем слышно, что музыканты вдохновлялись такими командами, как Death, Atheist, Pestilence (образца 1993 года) и тд. И это при том, что сами эти коллективы выпускали в то же самое время свои культовые релизы. По итогу, "Destiny" - это очень сильная работа, практически целиком лишённая детских болезней отечественного дэт-метала, которая при должном продюссировании/продвижении могла бы стать важной частью мирового дэт-метал наследия (как те же "Аспид", например, спустя годы стали группой, которую знает почти каждый, кто достаточно глубоко в теме трэш-метала).

| 11 | "Melissa - In Mourning" 1995
Вообще, я не согласен, что это дэт-метал как везде пишут, для меня это скорее олдскульный мелодичный дэт с элементами дума. Поначалу альбом звучит как обычный дэт-метал релиз того времени, разве что саунд немного странный (в частности гитары), но уже со второго трека прослеживается некоторые думовые элементы. А дальше ещё интересней: мелодичные моменты, рифы с претензией на прогрессив, проигрыши с чистой гитарой, клавишные инструменталы, много дум моментов, но при этом это всё ещё дэт-метал. В целом, сабж очень напоминает "Crimson" от "Edge of Sanity", вот только вышел он сам на год раньше легендарного шведского релиза. Начиная с трека Vampire (кстати, один из моих любимых на альбоме) начинается чистый кайф. Очень жалко, что такой крутейший и мастерски исполненный материал оформлен в не самом лучшем саунде. Вот серьёзно, раскидать бы гитару больше по панораме, сделать чуть потише и серединку прибрать - была бы просто имба. Но в любом случае альбом 10/10, всем настоятельно советую и рекомендую ознакомиться. | 129 |
| 12 | "Necrocannibal - Somnambuliformic Possession" 1994
Первый и единственный релиз коллектива со смешным брутальным названием представляет собой типичный дэт-метал середины/первой половины 90-х с характерным сырым саундом. С технической точки зрения можно выделить вокал, который тут прям весьма неплох. Единственно, имхо, на нём не хватает ревера для атмосферности. Касательно материала - основная проблема, как и у тех же "Graveside": он однообразен до невозможности. Это не плохо и не хорошо, таких альбомов полно и многие их с кайфом слушают. Но имхо, мне не особо интересно слушать целиком альбом из +- тех же аранжировочных ходов и одинаковых барабанов. Даже у без прикола крутого вокала есть обратная сторона: он везде одинаково хорош и, соответственно, точно так же однообразен.. Видно (даже по названию), что ребята вдохновлялись Cannibal corpse, кое-где есть похожие моменты (или прямые заимствования как рифф в треке "Necrocannibal"), но при этом нету ни одного(!) бластбита. Вообще подозреваю, что именно барабанные партии тут основная причина однообразности. Но с другой стороны, найти драммера, увереено умеющего в ровный бласт - это и сегодня задача нетривиальная, а в СНГ начала девяностых - и вовсе на грани возможного. | 145 |
| 13 | Здравствуйте уважаемые пипищеки, с вами дэт-метал админ, и сегодня заключительная статья про русский дэт-метал 90-х.
В прошлые разы мы прошлись по виниловым изданиям 1993 года, на очереди 1994-95, и.. винил закончился, cd для андеграунда ещё не завезли, соответственно, релизы, рассматриваемые ниже на момент своего выхода были доступны исключительно на кассетах. Так что, достаём из подвала/кладовки или привозим с дачи старый запыленный магнитофон и погружаемся в эпоху магнитной ленты. | 143 |
| 14 |  +5Сентябрь начался с не самых приятных новостей – мой хороший знакомый Нейл (интервью с которым вы можете прочесть здесь), что помогал мне связываться с некоторыми людьми из зарубежной андеграунд метал-сцены и публиковал мои интервью на своём сайте, к сожалению, ушёл из индустрии, и на этот раз окончательно.
Прямо сейчас у меня самой в жизни всё непросто, и я и сама подумываю о том, чтобы уйти. Я перестала выкладывать посты на регулярной основе, давно не вижу фидбека от аудитории, получая мизерные просмотры в сравнении с количеством подписчиков, и прочее, что вы и сами могли заметить. Не думаю, что к этому меня подтолкнули какие-то конкретные события, это просто копилось и теперь медленно находит выход. Этот пост всё ещё не прощальный, у меня в планах как минимум ещё 3 интервью, запланированных на сентябрь, но теперь вы вряд ли так сильно удивитесь, если одним днём я просто напишу, что устала и ухожу.

| 17 |  Ребят! Сегодня небольшой, но важный для нас день — Barastyr Productions исполняется ровно один год.
Хочу сказать спасибо всем, кто всё это время был рядом,слушал наши релизы,поддерживал лейбл и помогал ему развиваться. За этот год мы выпустили около 30 альбомов,что для такого относительно маленького андеграундного лейбла считаю очень хорошим результатом.
Я всегда старался максимально внимательно подходить к выбору музыки и выпускать только тот материал,который действительно нравится мне и моей аудитории,и за которым стоит что-то своё.
Для меня Barastyr Productions — это возможность помогать интересным проектам находить свою аудиторию.
За этот год я познакомился и поработал с большим количеством классных людей из нашей сцены: Варпом из Distro From Warp, Софией из Mayhem Facts & Quotes, Ноктисом из Suuri Talvi, Rotten In Sorrow, Crying Orpheus и многими другими. Спасибо вам за доверие,поддержку и приятное общение.
За этот год было много всего — новые знакомства,новые проекты,неожиданные моменты и просто много хорошей музыки. Рад,что вокруг лейбла собрались люди,которым действительно интересен андеграунд и которые продолжают делать своё дело.
