There are only ~950 2M barrel-capacity VLCC super tankers in the world, and “if you’re losing a couple of those every day” trying to run Iran’s Hormuz blockade, “that adds up very, very quickly,” energy expert Rory Johnston says.
💬 “The types of attacks are also changing,” Johnston told Drop Site News, with hull strikes requiring 1-2 weeks of repairs replaced more and more by attacks on engine rooms that take “months” to fix.
The attacks are also growing more and more sophisticated, he said.
In one instance, a drone “hovered above the tanker, flew down its main smokestack, and blew up in the engine room.”
Strikes are getting more severe, too, with two of the three ships sunk since February sunk “in the last three weeks.”
The crisis has not only caused shipping rates to explode to “all time” highs, from $2-3 a barrel to $25-30, but countries’ use of small shadow fleets to smuggle through the straits requiring 2-3 ship transfers, and tying up VLCCs in a market where “time is volume and capacity.”
To date, the commercial maritime casualties of the US-Iran war include:

🔶 the engine rooms of four ships, including a tanker, two super tankers and a merchant vessel targeted since the start of October
