We must be a force for creation in a culture bent on our destruction.

This was an interesting one. A kerykeion, done in a Germanic style. I opted to go with Urnes type serpents, though I had to adapt and simplify them slightly to keep the piece's strength. Also, as its quite fragile, I had to do most of the shaping with a knife, rather than the usual chisels and gouges, which was fun. Stuck a modest little othala rune in there too. The carving stands at 12" tall and is made completely out of ash, blackened off, rubbed back again and coated in Danish oil.

The Hearth of Devon’s Midsummer blot to Thunor was attended by 25 worshippers last night in Somerset. It was an auspicious offering of mead libations, bone fire, a bread idol, and other food including a communal goat stew. The blot was followed by sumble and games late into the night.

This week is the sunstead and the full moon. A good time for a blot. The Hearth of Devon shall blot to the thunderer this weekend!

Oh, the camera kept slipping from the vibrations. I eventually stuck a piece of wood down in front of it 😅

Some traditional carved gates from Romania and Hungary, mostly from Székaly and Maramures. Although Romanian and Hungarian folk symbols now contain many Christian aspects, they still contain many pagan aspects as well. Some of the most common motifs are: The Solar Wheel, symbolizing life, fertility and attracting positive energy. Probably the most common symbol as the sun was the life-giver. The Rope, which is often carved on the supporting poles of the front porch, symbolizes infinity and is meant to protect the household and keep connected the earth to the infinite and the higher realms above. The Horse, representing majestic beauty and strength, which is also directly connected to the sun and the rope. Local folklore says the sun travelled across the sky in a chariot drawn by white horses. The horse itself, 'cal', symbolizes heat, warmth, and summer. The Tree of Life, symbolizing growth, rebirth, and vitality. Other common symbols are stars, triangles, wheat, roosters, and grapevines.
