English  word stress rules about word stress in english -⭕- onl vowel sound are stressed (a,e,i,o,u). -⭕-A general  rules is that for two syllable  words ,noun and adjective  have the same syllable ,but verb have the stress on the second syllable . For example  :𝐭𝐚ble (noun),𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜ial(adjective),de𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝(verb). ⭕Word ending in 'ic', 'tion' or 'sion' always place their stress on the penultimate(second to last )syllable.(e.g.super𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜,At𝐥𝐚𝐧tic,dedi𝐜𝐚tion,at𝐭𝐞𝐧tion,transfor𝐦𝐚tion,compre𝐡𝐞𝐧sion). ⭕words ending in 'cy', 'ty', 'gy' and 'al' always  place their stress on third fom last  syllable.(e.g acc𝐨𝐮𝐧tancy, sinc𝐞𝐫ity, chro𝐧𝐨𝐥ogy, inspi𝐫𝐚𝐭ional, hypo𝐭𝐡𝐞tical,). ⭕word ending  in 'sm' with 3 or fewer syllables have their  stress on the first syllable (e.g 𝐩𝐫𝐢sm, 𝐬𝐜𝐡i𝐢sm,𝐚𝐮𝐭ism,𝐛𝐨𝐭ulism,𝐬𝐚𝐫casm)unless if tgey are extension of o stem word .this is often the case with words ending 'ism'. ⭕words ending in 'ism'tend to follow the stress rules for the stem word with the 'ism' tagged onto the end (e.g 𝐜𝐚𝐧nibal=𝐜𝐚𝐧nibalism,ex𝐩𝐫𝐞ssion=ex𝐩𝐫𝐞ssionism,𝐟𝐞𝐦inist=𝐟𝐞𝐦inism, oppor𝐭𝐮𝐧itst=oppor𝐭𝐮𝐧ism) ⭕Englich word ending in 'ous' with 4 syllables usually  have  their stress on the second syllable (e.g gre𝐠𝐫𝐚ious,a𝐧𝐨𝐧ymous,su𝐩𝐞𝐫fulous,an𝐝𝐫𝐨gynous, car𝐧𝐢𝐯orous, tem𝐩𝐞𝐬tous, lux𝐮𝐫ious, hil𝐚𝐫ious, con𝐭𝐢𝐧uous, cons𝐩𝐢𝐜uous).there some exception using different  stressed syllables, such as sacrilegious ,which stresses the third syllables. ‌unknown S‌ol‌u‌t‌i‌on‌ ‌T‌e‌a‌m 07032599536

❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️❇️ EMPHATIC STRESS is used in a sentence to show the meaning, that the speaker wants to convey. It is usually identified by the capitalization of words specifically emphasized. Emphatic stress is put in the form of questions through a sentence/ statement. Example; Helen is my FIRST daughter (a) Is Helen my second daughter? (b) Is Ngozi my first daughter? (c) Is Peace my first nephew? (d) Is Chika my first cousin? Note: The option that directly stands in contrast with the stressed word(s) and contains not the capitalized word is the correct answer. RHYME is defined as a word that has the same sound. This implies that rhyme occurs when two words have the same sound at the same position. We identify rhyme by the similarity of sounds (not letters). Examples: Words.        Rhyme Ro-s-e          cea-s-e B-oy-             t-oi-let T-a-sk           c-a-t   S-n-uff          s-n-ow Plan-t           sigh-t Epita-ph       sta-ff Feti-sh         sa-ch-et Ma-k-e         drasti-c *SOUND CLASSIFICATION* This is the aspect of English studies that deals with phonetics, that is, how words are pronounced. In English, sounds are derived from the 26 (twenty-six) alphabets of A, B, C, D...Z otherwise known as orthographic symbols. Types of English Sounds There are two basic sounds in English and they are vowels and consonants VOWELS: English is well known for having a large number of vowels as many as twenty altogether. Vowels are speech sounds made with a clear channel when the mouth is slightly open thus allowing air to pass freely from the lungs through the oral cavity. This implies that vowels are sounds produced without any obstruction, articulation or restriction of the air stream by any of the speech organs. The quality of vowel produced depends on the shape of the oral cavity as modified by the position of the tongue and the lips. Since vowels do not have the same place of articulation as consonants, they are defined as voiced sounds produced with an open approximation of the articulators such as tongue, lips, jaws, etc. There are five fundamental vowels and they are a, e, i, o, u.   Unknown solution team 07032599536

♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️♣️            English major concentration                 👇👇👇👇 *MEANING OF STRESS* Stress is defined as the muscular effort at uttering a word, which is perceived by the speaker himself at great intensity while the listener perceives it as loudness. It is a means by which a certain syllable in an utterance is given prominence over others. A syllable is the smallest unit into which words can be divided. A syllable is made up of a vowel sound and usually a consonant or more. A word may have a sound segment (syllable) or more. Syllabication is the division of a word into syllables in terms of either phonological (speech sound) or orthographic (letters). We have three major syllables. They include; Monosyllabic, Disyllabic, and Polysyllabic. Monosyllabic word: A word is said to be monosyllabic when it contains only one sound segment Example; Cat, the pen, etc. Disyllabic word: This is a word with two sound segments or syllables. Example; cont/tain, cor/rect, dun/geon, etc. Polysyllabic word: This is a word with three or more sound segments. Example; cir/cum/stance, punc/tua/tion, etc. Note that some syllables may consist of vowels alone. Examples include: a, an, ah, etc. TYPES OF STRESS We have three types of stress in the English language. They are primary, secondary, and unstress syllables. However, primary stress is the most important stress in English and it can be identified by the following features: (i) Loudness of voice (ii) Length of the word (iii) Quality of the vowel. POSITION OF STRESS: The loudness, pitch, length, and quality of the stress sound of words to the ear determine the position of stress. The number of syllables such as, monosyllabic, disyllabic, or polysyllabic words can also determine the position of stress. Some words can function as a noun or a verb depending on the position of the stress. Examples of such words are shown below; As a Noun.      As a Verb 'Escort            Es' cort 'Comfort         Com' fort 'Protest           Pro'test 'Project           Proj'ect 'Transport      Trans'port 'Benefit           Be'nefit 'Contest         Con'test 'e-mail (email)  e'mail The above examples show that words that can function as nouns are stressed on the first syllable while words that can function as verbs are stressed on the second syllable. Three syllabic words can be stressed on either first, second, or third syllables. Examples are shown below; STRESS ON FIRST SYLLABLE Thankfully - THANK-ful-ly Ruminate - RU-min-ate Centralism - CEN-tral-ism Celluloid - CEL-lu-loid Argument - AR-gu-ment STRESS ON SECOND SYLLABLE Advantage - ad-VAN-tage Ignition -  ig-NI-tion Industrial - in-DUS-trial Interpret - in-TER-pret Narration - nar-RA-tion STRESS ON THIRD SYLLABLE Represent - rep-re-SENT Insincere - in-sin-CERE Barricade - bar-ri-CADE Reportage - re-por-TAGE Incomplete - in-com-PLETE Unknown solution team 07032599536
